Hello there

I am working on doctoral applications at selected business schools in the US, this Fall. I need to understand how important the GMAT score really is on a doctoral application.

I have recently taken the GMAT (with a month's preparation) and scored a 700 - Q49/V37. I do realise that this is below the average for top schools, but not by much. Having said that, I find myself in the all too familiar tussle between investing a few more hours studying and retaking the exam, or using those precious hours for making other aspects of my application solid. I have 4 more months until the application windows open.

Here are a few more pointers about my profile:
1. Undergrads:B.Tech degree from India
2. Postgrads: MBA from Asian Institute of Technology, Thailand with a CGPA of 3.9/4.0
3. Overall work experience of 8 years spanning industries from software to manufacturing
4. Two research experiences as an MBA student: consulting for a Finnish telecom company, and Swiss logistics company respectively, besides Teaching Assistantship stint for a semester at MBA School.

I hope you will kindly offer a few words of advice!

Many thanks.

For doctoral positions far more important is:
1. Your publications
2. Your thesis proposal
3. Your teaching experience
4. Your research experience
5. Your ability to onboard a professor to supervise your topic

Yes, GMAT and GPA are also very important, but dont lose sight of the rest.

Best,
JF
