Hello,
My name is Jai Singh, from India. Please guide as to what should be my next step.
GMAT 1st attempt yesterday : Score 730 (QA 50, VA 39, IR 8)
Undergrad % : 62% Bachelor of Engineering. I don't have a very good percentage, but from one of the top 10 colleges in India.
Work experience : 4yrs by fall 2017 (1yr corporate, 2 yrs in a couple of self started startups)

Sir I was expecting a score of more than 750, never scored less than 740 in the mocks, kaplan+manhattan+gmatprep.
I kind of messed up the verbal section as couldn't attempt all, was able to do only 35 questions, randomly marked the next 4 and couldn't even mark the last 2.
My target schools are the ivys, now i am really confused between whether to apply with these scores or to give another attempt.
If i do decide on giving other attempt, should i cancel my 730 score and then give the other attempt or should i keep these scores and just give 1 more?
If i do cancel my scores and give another attempt and for some reason i end up scoring less than 730, am i allowed to cancel that new low score and reinstate my previous better score? And in either case which is a preferable gmat score report, 2 attempts - 1st with 730 and 2nd with lets say 750 or just 1 attempt with 750 score.
Is 730 a sufficient score to get into ivys?

Please advise as soon as possible.
Thank You

Sincerely
Jai

Jai,

There is no reason to cancel a 730! That is a very good score and would never hurt you to have on your record. Whether it is worth taking it again to increase your score would depend on the rest of your profile, so please email your resume and we can discuss further. It is true that you come from a competitive group of applicants so a 750-760 is different than 730 for the best schools. That said, I get applicants like you in with a 730 every year so I really need to dive into your background further.

Relax though! Take a day off and then let's chat further.

Hi Jai,

Please see my response below:

Now what i am confused about is that if i cancel it right now, and give another attempt and for some godforsaken reason end up scoring less than 730, so obviously i would want to cancel it and get my previous score of 730 back. Am i allowed to do so? I can certainly cancel the new score, thats clearly mentioned, but no where it is mentioned that while reinstating, there will be an individual option to reinstate all the cancelled scores or just 1 option to reinstate the last cancelled score. the latter option shouldn't be the case, but the thing is, nothing is mentioned clearly. If you could please provide clarity on this, I would be highly obliged. As much as I'd like to help you here, I'd prefer to defer this advice to GMAT experts on this forum. I suggest you re-post your question in a relevant thread. OR even call up GMAC. Their hours are 8am-4pm EST.

Now coming back to my score of 730, it is a decent score, maybe sufficient to get me through one of the best, but I am just worried about one thing, a situation in which i do not make it to one of the top 10, now under those circumstances, if i had a score of say 750, i would be certain that my profile lacked something, but it definitely was not because of a low gmat score, if apply with 730 and i do not make it, then i would be drawn between the weak application or the low gmat scores. This is what is bothering me the most. I lack the experience to take a call whether the score of 730 is sufficient or not. Without knowing details of your background and goals and other details, it is nearly impossible to say 730 is sufficient for your target schools. And even if everything looks good on paper, its all a game of probability. As I said before, even 760 is not enough if the other parts of application suck! However, If you think you can score higher and have time and resources to do that, I'd say go ahead. Retake it. The best possible scenario could be that you get a much higher score and that would help your admission chances. But just in case you get ~730 or less, you will know you gave your best shot and you will not live with any regret. :)

As stated above you definitely do not want to cancel your score. A 730 is a strong score that is in line with all of the averages at the Ivys. If you retake and score higher they will look at the highest score anyways so it does not make sense to delete the 730 especially if you score lower in a subsequent attempt
