I am from India and I applied this year with a GMAT score of 700 after 7 attempts with 6.5 years of work ex in Product Management in IT and have a GPA of 6.1 on 10 point scale. Post my MBA, I would like to get into Product Management/ Tech Consulting.

I got an admit from Schulich (MBA in India program), Olin and waitlisted at Smeal. I was also interviewed by ISB, IIM Calcutta, W P Carey and have one scheduled next week with Broad. I was never invited for interview for Rotman, Sauder, NUS, Scheller and IIM Bangalore.

Since I did not receive any scholarship this year, I am planning to retake GMAT within a month's time so that if I can improve my score, I can start early this year and apply for Fall '18 intake so that I receive scholarships. Also, I am not banking just on the GMAT but also on my profile as I have considerable amount of improvement there as well.

If am able to improve my score then, fine. If not, then I would like to know now how schools will perceive a drop/same/cancelled score?

Hi Sid,
In my opinion you shouldn't take any more GMATs. But I do understand where you are coming from. If scholarship is imperative upon you pursuing an MBA, then yes 700 maybe on the lower side. You do realise that adcoms look at more than your GMAT score, right? They will look at your GPA, Work ex, essays, LoRs, video essay, interview, etc. You need to differentiate your profile from the typical Indian candidate with IT background. Look for improving leadership opportunities in community service. I would also recommend you to re-visit your post MBA goals and shortlist few safe schools. Right now you're everywhere. You are applying in India, Singapore, USA and Canada.
To answer your question, business schools will look at your best score without any negative judgement on their part.

Hi,

Thank you for your feedback. I would like to add some pointers here. FYI, I did put up a good application this season just that I started late, say R2 and R3. And I do have some updates/improvements to show from my work which will strengthen my application next season. And next time I'm planning to apply really early. So I just want to make it stronger by having a stronger GMAT, if that's possible. On that note, I would like to know how will my application be impacted if don't manage to score better?

It would also be great if you can let me know how can I take up a community work that really has an impact in the community and also leverage my application. I mean I don't wanna look like those who take up community work for personal gains and then quit once I'm in.

Hi Sid!
As I said earlier, if you score lower on your next GMAT it wont affect negatively on your application.
The best way to get involved in the community is by pursuing something you like. You may teach students, build houses for the less privileged, work in soup kitchen, etc. Talk to friends, family and colleagues and find the best match in your city. Feel free to contact me for further discussion.

Sid,

Taking it again can only help you. If you don't do better, then you can cancel your score and the schools will not see it. That is the benefit of canceling scores. So if you are interested in spending the time and money, then give it another shot and see how you do. Good luck!

I see several areas to address- since the 6.1/10 GPA is not really helping you, the best way to counter that is a really strong GMAT- which you don't have now for your pool. If you applied R1 with an improved GMAT and improved work experience and clearer goals- then you could indeed present better next year. However, you can't be sure that you will do better on GMAT and so if you are interested in an MBA at Olin or Schulich, I could say that you should give those strong consideration as both are good schools.
However, if your heart is not in it, I see no downside to retaking the GMAT but cancel the score if it is not higher than 700 - you don't need any more scores showing up unless they are better than 700. Good luck to you!

You are most welcome. I don't have an official explanation for the 8 times, but it is rare for someone to want to take it more than that anyway. It does force you to focus and study and decide when the right time is take it rather than continue to take it repeatedly. Good luck!

Hi Sid,

The lifetime limit of 8 attempts was announced last December by GMAC. You can take the GMAT exam once every 16 calendar days and no more than five times in a 12-month period and no more than eight times total (lifetime limit effective December 17, 2016). This was done primarily to curb fraudulent practices, people who may, for instance memorize questions and then sell them to aspirants. And in response to your earlier question, even cancelled attempts are counted towards the eight attempts.

7 is a lot of GMATs to take but if scholarship money is your goal an improved GMAT will help here but is not necessarily the magi bullet. It seems you have a good handle on others where you have improved so make sure you are packaging all of your growth

Thank you for the response. FYI, I have cancelled my scores twice during my saga, one score doesn't appear on my score card anymore as it is older than 5 years and one is about to cross the 5 year mark this August.

So currently, my number of scores in my scorecard is 7 (including the cancelled two). Does that mean I have already exhausted my 8 attempts? Or will the one older than 5 years old score (and the one about to expire in August) not be considered towards 8 attempts?

Hi Sid,

Unfortunately, GMAC has introduced this last December and while there is a certain amount of ambiguity, the general interpretation is that the limit extends to all cancelled and expired tests as well. (Hence, they use the word lifetime.) However, we have also heard that they do entertain appeals as well. The best way to confirm your dilemma is to contact their customer care.

Having said that, we don't think there is cause for apprehension. 700 is a competitive score. We recommend that you also do a certain amount of introspection:
1. Are you applying to the right schools?
2. Are your goals and leadership examples powerful enough?
3. Did you ask these schools (where you interviewed) for feedback? Was GMAT really the deal breaker? Re-applicants who act on feedback often have the best chances.

Try our B-school selector tool for a free consultation. Lastly, a lot of schools accept GRE scores. If you are convinced that a low score is the reason for a non-admit, go for GRE!

Hi Apphelp

That's a lot of questions which I have no answers right now. Probably shows the areas where I should be doing next time. Thank you for those inputs. Personally, I don't prefer taking GRE now as I believe I can get better results by placing my bets in other areas of my profile than place everything in just one bucket - Academics.
