Question

Making a career change into finance. I have two options. Analyst in a recently founded small private equity firm focused in frontier markets(would be working in Africa) or an analyst position in a medium sized hedge fund here in the states. Which job experience would look better when applying to top business schools?

Both are impressive, I would say the option that best aligns with your post-MBA goals. Without any additional info from you I would say the option that allows you some international experience would probably diversify your application best. Ultimately the opportunity that allows you to make the biggest impact on your organization or develop interpersonal skills like leadership/teamwork would set your application up best

Both seem like good options but what is your post-MBA goal? One of the jobs is likely to make more sense in the long run, depending on where you want to get to after your MBA, so I would choose a job depending on that if I were you.

Hi there,

It really depends on what your post-MBA goals are - you should choose the role that makes the most sense given what you desire to do in the future. You should be able to "connect the dots" between your prior roles, the current role, and your future role. Admissions Committees will want to understand why you took on the role that you did - hope that makes sense!
