hi Scott,
I am a prospective MBA aspirant, planning to apply in 2006 and join in 2007.
Here's my profile:
GMAT score : 730
AWA : 4.0
I am an engineering graduate from a TOP engg. school in India - belong to the category called RECs, Recently rename as NITs and have a GPA OF 3.65.
Total work exp: 3.0 yrs currently (will be 4.0 when I apply and nearly 5.0) when I join. Working in India with a TOP US MNC in the ERP - financials domain.
Community work : Have been associated with a global volunteer organization which is supported and developed by my organization. Have undertaken projects on "encouraging and building self esteem for blind children".
I plan to apply to :
1. Wharton
2. MICHIGAN-Ross
3. Duke
4. CMU Tepper
5. UNC-kenan flagler
6. Indiana Kelley
7. OSU - Fisher
Here are my questions for you:
1. How important is the AWA score w.r.t. the above universities, since I have scored less should I retake my GMAT only to improve the AWA. Do these universities place a cut-off on AWA.?
2. I have heard from a lot of people that the average GMAT for Indian students is high - much higher than the general average. Can you throw some light on this aspect.
3. I am seriously planning to follow your book - "The MBA Game Plan", since I do not have an access to any review resource, can you please brief me on what aspects your book is going to help me and in what way.

1) I wouldn't worry about the AWA *too much*. While a 4 is a bit low, well written essays can help overcome this score.
2) I don't know what the actual average GMAT score is for Indian applicants, but anecdotally, I've also heard that it's higher than average. Read this next sentence carefully: Your attitude about this should be "Who cares?"!!! The *problem* for a lot of Indian applicant is that they have high GMAT scores and great undergrad transcripts, but nothing to set themselves apart from the rest. (And a high GMAT score is NOT a differentiating factor.) Focus on your leadership experiences in and outside of the workplace, your hobbies, your passions, etc.!
3) I'm not quite sure how to answer this question, but I think the real value for you will be the overall framework, and understanding the importance of <b>showing fit with your target school</b> AND <b>differentiating yourself from fellow applicants</b>. These two things are the core of the MBA Game Plan philosphy, and we show you in detail how to do both. We also provide a lot of specific advice on essays, interviews, etc. Also, if I can give our web site brief plug, also check out our web site for more essay advice and dozens of free sample MBA essays.
