Hi All,
This is my very first post on this forum
. I joined this forum two weeks back. Good to be here guys.
My background:
Oh yeah unfortunately I belong to the biggest pool of "IT Engineers"
I had completed my B.E from VTU in the year 2012 and got placed in Infosys Ltd through a campus interview. I joined Infy in 2013 July. There my client was Apple Inc. and I got two role changes. Later in that project I led a team of 2 and trained them.
Then I joined another another indian company which is very small and less known. The reason behind my switch was I wanted to core development and work in a smaller team. Here I am a core website developer and handling an US client.
Something about my decision on taking GMAT:
I always wanted to get into business and I tried a few but failed. Since I belong to a middle class family like most of us never dared to quit my job.
After working on IT services, maintenance work and software development I feel its a high time to do something which satisfies my soul and decided to do an MBA and started preparing for CAT this year(Aug). Then after a month I felt GMAT will be best suit for my profile; and here I am.
Now about my profile:
I turned 27 on last 25th.
I have always been an average student.
+2 marks: 78%
B.E : 69.4% (don't know how to convert to GPA)
Apart from this I am an artist and a photographer.
I learnt fine art till 2nd year ( during my school time only)and then decided to learn on my own.
In college I did a certification on photography.
As community service I teach art n photography to school kids during their off days.
I visited a few NGOs and volunteer a trip to an orphanage in Bangalore during my Infy days, but never started a campaign on my own.
(Apart from these I write poems and songs, but in my native language)
I know my profile lacks major management work and I did not do a much of leadership work. So I need your advice on how should I go about building my profile better and unique.
Will my creative skills help? How do I leverage my extra curriculars into leadership work?
Please help me out. And please let me know if any other information is needed.

Dear Rakesh,
Well as you might guess... first and foremost: GMAT. Get that done and the TOEFL too. You are young so in no rush. You can apply this year, next, in three years. You'll still be eligible. Just choose the time that's right for you.
Secondly, regarding, what can you do to improve your profile over the next years???
I would like to present you with a list of ideas, which should help you:
- Definitely do at least one if not real real volunteer works while you are working. The BEST possible volunteer work is anything that has to do with leadership or fundraising, so if you see those opportunities, jump on them!
- Make sure you do the best possible at work, taking any opportunities to lead, to get involved in social events, to advance at work, and remain at the top.
- Likewise try and keep up your life! What I mean is that schools LOVE candidates who have a broad range of activities and interests. So sports, culture, whatever. As always, if it is leadership roles you are taking on they are better than non-leadership roles.
- If you have any interest in entrepreneurship as a side project, it can be good to have that in your profile.
- If you have any interest in politics as a side project, it can be good to have that in your profile.
There are probably more things that I am not yet thinking about, but this is a very good place to start!
Overall things look promising. Right now we are too early to start getting into actual school evaluation, but this is a good start.
While you are at it, I would also suggest trying to visit the target schools, to attend events, and to learn about them as much as possible. This long-term work will pay off greatly when it comes time for you to apply.
