Hi All,
I am a private equity associate finishing up my first year at a middle market (<$5Bn AUM) fund after spending two years at a bulge bracket investment bank. I am planning on applying to MBA a schools this upcoming cycle with the goal of returning to private equity. I'm only interested in the top 5 or so schools (and really focused on HSW) but it seems like I'm in an incredibly competitive pool of applicants and there seems to be a lot of randomness with admissions, especially at the schools I'm focused on. How can I stand apart from the 1000s of other PE associates out there? My stats are competitve -- 3.8 GPA, 770 GMAT, top 20 (non-ivy school) with some generic extra curricular activities / leadership roles.

Thanks for sharing your profile. You have a very strong profile, and I would not necessarily consider PE applicants as a commodity but rather their profiles tend to be very similar to each other. But even with all of that being said, you have the right idea in mind, you will certainly need to look for ways to differentiate yourself. I would say your best leverage opportunities will be through the essays, and pulling out a narrative that can better personalize your application outside of all of the other superlatives you listed above. The more personal and the more off the page the better. Another leverage point is your recommendations, I would make sure you are working closely with your recommenders so they are fully informed on the importance of pursuing an MBA and highlighting the unique aspects and important moments they have spent with you.
