Background: Male, 25 this month, American, Married and have a daughter less than 1 year old
Undergrad: 3.80, Accounting major, college athlete, small private Christian college in Southern California (e.g. Westmont, Vanguard, San Diego Christian)
GMAT: 690 (Q 48, V 36)
Work Experience:
2.25 years in Public Accounting at small, regional firm (one office)
Passed all CPA exams within one year
0.75 years as Assistant Controller (accounting) at my Alma Mater to gain more leadership experience
Volunteer Experience:
1.5 years on leadership team as Treasurer at my church (15+ hour commitment per month)
Post-MBA Goals:
Equity Research (buy or sell-side) or Asset Management (Hedge Fund or otherwise)
I have a strong passion for capital markets, but my experience/ec doesn't reflect it.
Target Schools/ProgramThis is where I am at a loss... I am right in the middle of having too much experience for a MSF program like Vanderbilt/Villanova (MIT was the dream, but is now out because of my Quant score), and not enough experience to pursue an MBA.
The one-year program at Cornell/Emory/Notre Dame or a two year program at UVA/Cornell/UNC/Kelley/Vanderbilt is where I think I could get in. Ideally, I'd love to end up somewhere in the Pacific Northwest, but for the interim I'm open to living anywhere except for the NYC/Boston area and the deep South.
I plan to have all my applications completed by the end of September of this year.
Two Questions:
Seeing that my experience is somewhat related to where I want to go,
am I naive in thinking a one-year program will be enough to help secure a solid ER/AM position post-MBA? I would attempt to secure a pre-MBA/MSF internship at an investment firm before the program starts to gain some industry experience. Or should I perish the thought and pursue a two-year program?
Also, as I'm sure most people would, I'd like to complete my higher education with the least amount of debt as possible and the highest possible return, so
would it be prudent to retake the GMAT? My GMATPrep CATs were a little higher (710-730) and I would really love scholarship money since I also have a family to support.
Thank you for your time!
