Hello,
Quick stats about me - Indian (M, Age - 33). I am working in top IT/Consulting company (think Deloitte/Capgemini) from past 10 years. I am currently working in US and have been in same industry from beginning of my career.
I worked very hard for GMAT and ended up with 730. I have a decent GPA (> 3.5 in final year, first class overall) and have had great success in my company. My main objective of MBA was to move into a more functional role within my industry (as I am currently focused in a non-strategy/consulting practice, at least from function perspective). I have developed great expertise in my industry and I wish to do consulting/product management within my industry.
So, here is my issue. Probably my good luck, I was approached by recruiters from two tier 3/4 consulting firms (think IBM Global Services) for Associate Partner track (it is an expert role within my industry). The position is in USA/Europe.
I was fully prepared for MBA, but this has really got me thinking now. I am thinking of joining one of the 2 firms (if given an offer) and here is my rationale:
1) My objective of doing full time MBA was to break into consulting/functional roles and I seem to have achieved that with these 2 opportunities.
2) Even if I get selected in a top school (I was trying for INSEAD/IMD/Oxford/Judge), I would start with relatively junior role post MBA. With the current offer, I will be way ahead in my career level.
3) Opportunity cost, uncertainty about work permits and being able to break into consulting firms are other reasons diluting my motivation for MBA.
Don't get me wrong. I was totally fine in taking those risks, but I am taking a U-turn now.
I know what you guys might be thinking - I haven't even been admitted in any B School yet. But, I might have to respond to one of the 2 offers next week and with this new opportunity I might not remain motivated to do full time MBA (or you might say I don't need to do one as I have achieved my goal without it).
I haven't started with my B school applications, but it seems to be a sensible decision to take the offer. Does it make sense to you?
