Quick Question: How should a person approach an "MBA Goals" application essay if s/he doesn't know what s/he wants to do?
Quick Answer: You make up something. Because you MUST have a goal. There’s no way that any Adcom will be satisfied with a goal that is “let’s see what happens”. Now they KNOW that most applicants don’t end up doing what they propose in their essays, but at the same time, how would you write an essay justifying your application without having a clear and concrete goal?
If you don’t know where to start - be pragmatic, and start with your past. Put yourself in the shoes of a recruiter/employer, and ask yourself: who would be interested in my profile? Chances are if you have five years in marketing, then some sort of goal in marketing would be great. The key is to CONNECT to your past, which is a solid foundation for your future.
This helps ensure that your goals are logical and plausible. At the same time, you definitely do want to be ambitious. So aim high, but within reason.
