Curious to hear group thoughts on chances of getting into a top b-school
Overview:
- Tech-oriented female looking to gain general business acumen as well as continued tech/ strategy skillset
- Looking to switch industries (from financial services to healthcare or consumer retail)
- From the US; want to live/ travel abroad - b-school seems like cheapest/ best option
Numbers:
- 3.5/4 at Top 15 U.S. University
- GMAT: 700
Professional Experience:
- 1 year in Tech Consulting at household name (Accenture, Deloitte, IBM, etc)
- 2 years in Fintech at top 2 U.S. bank
Extras:
- On the young professional board of a multi-national non-profit; also weekly volunteer at a grassroots org for underserved high school students enduring college application process
- Potential to launch social responsibility mobile app
Top Schools: London Business School, INSEAD, MIT, Wharton, Haas, NYU
Looking for general counsel in terms of ways to improve my application/ schools to consider - I have time before I begin applying (18 months), generally have struggled with the GMAT although I know that's the "lowest hanging fruit". Thanks!

You have great schools on list.
Just if you are from US and want to live abroad why do you even target some US schools ?
Being a aspiring female is going to be your advantage, from cultural diversification perspective, especially in Europe as being US female.
Not that many US students choose Europe over US, still.
With your GMAT score you are set for LBS and INSEAD and I would recommend adding even some more European schools on your list, since living abroad is your goal.

I can recommend Oxford, Cambridge, Imperial, LSE (for some master in the field that you want to shift on) HEC, IMD, etc. depending on your geographic preference.
Here are average GMAT scores for your target US schools:
MIT 730
Wharton 732
Haas 726
NYU 716
Those are averages for admitted students, meaning higher and lower scores can work if overall profile is good one (as yours), so you can still be interesting to them with current score.
I am curious why would you like to move from such hot industry as FinTech ?

Hey beans123,
Thanks for posting! I really like your profile a lot. You've got brand name consulting and finance on the resume, which goes very far with both admissions and on-campus recruiting. A lot will depend on your roles/responsibilities at these firms and subsequent recommendations. If you progressed quickly and was put on the most desirable projects, it will shine through on your applications.
Academics look solid - nothing spectacular but no inherent weaknesses. If you've struggled with the GMAT (and 700 isnt too bad for "struggling!") you can always look to take the GRE or seek private tutoring. I really only see the GMAT being an issue for Wharton, but I do think a 720 would really make your candidacy pop. What were your score breakdowns?
I do think you've got a real solid shot at your target schools. While a higher GMAT would most certainly increase your chances, a 700 isn't a dealbreaker. Continue to work hard at your current role and seek the maximum amount of responsibility/promotion potential - don't fall into the trap of slacking. I'm not sure about the mobile app - what is your ultimate goal here and will you be able to either monetize or build a sizable user base? Schools tend to look past "side projects" that are not a full-time experience.
