Hello Gmatclub community,
New here. Considering doing an MBA in fall of 2020 and looking for some guidance on realistic targets. Here is my profile:
- 28 years old, Indian-American (parents from India)
- 700 GMAT
- Went to IU Kelley (Honors) for UG, graduated Magna Cum Laude
- Worked at ATK for 4 years until Manager
- Left a few years back to start a real estate investment firm, raised about $4m from investors. Doing well. About 20-25% ROI.
- Started a construction / contracting company as well, generated $500k in revenues first year.
- Both doing well, but looking to ideally break more into 'hard' finance in same sectors, a la REPE or something similar.
- Essays and LOR's will probably be average
So, given my profile, what schools do you think are realistic?

- The academic arc looks good however the GMAT, also given your consulting background can be about modest; something that may unnecessarily pull down your prospects despite some very bright things in the profile. Have you already considered a retake?
- The professional pitch sounds very impressive. Both your startups seem to be doing good as you mention - you'd have to explain what happens to them if you go the PE way.
- For reasons mentioned here, we don't speculate on school selection. That being said, the one thing you've not mentioned is anything on the ECs front. Here is why ECs matter in your application. Anything on this front?
- While LoR I can understand - though you should try your best not to have them average. But why would the essays be average? From the looks of it, you should have a good story to tell - so try harder!

From a real estate lover and former consultant who studied real estate at Wharton, I love your profile! I actually have another client who is former ATK and does real estate. I should connect you!
Overall your profile is really interesting. What is the Q/V split? Also what was your GPA? If it were not for the GMAT I would say schools like Wharton, CBS, Booth etc. With a 700 as an Indian I think schools like NYU would be good or other schools in that range. That said would you consider retaking? We have tutors on our team with 790 and 800 test scores, 4.0 GPAs from Ivy League schools and we can help you bump it up a bit. If you we do that, this opens the doors to M7 schools.
