No, you do not need to be a formal manager to be admitted to HBS. You just need to show an unusually high level of leadership and impact in and outside of work.

Your question regarding your GMAT and CPA grades suggests that you think admission to HBS is some kind of checklist of factors or that there are some kind of quantitative admission triggers. It doesn't work that way. It's not a strict meritocracy; it's a much more subjective process. There's no solid way to gauge your chances before applying.

So I'm not saying that you cannot get admitted to HBS. Nor am I saying that people with your numbers (or worse) don't get into HBS--they do. I am also not saying that you should not apply. You asked me for your "chances" at HBS, and since I didn't see the kind of level of impact and leadership that normally grabs HBS's attention, I answered conservatively.
