Hi everyone,
First, many thanks to all for this fantastic forum. What a gem.
Can you please take a look at my profile and tell me whether I stand a chance at my top-6 list of schools --
1. Stanford
2. Harvard
3. Wharton
4. Northwestern
5. Columbia
6. NYU
Caucasian male, nationality Dutch, age 27 at start of program in 2007
Undergraduate: combination of technology / marketing / business administration at University of Amsterdam
Undergrad GPA: 2.8 (my main weakness, mainly caused by immaturity, I intend to compensate with strong GMAT score, work experience, always having worked during studies, lack of GPA focus in Netherlands)
GMAT: 700+ (not taken yet, but prep scores indicate this)
Work experience:
- 5 years full-time at European division of American multinational
- Positions held:
- IT Manager Belgium
- Account Manager Europe, managing account portfolio worth $2m per year
- IT Manager Continental Europe, Middle East, Africa, managing $2m annual budget and leading 11 staff
- Selected by senior management to attend President's International Management Course at company's HQ
- Selected to provide IT project management in major public reparation program in Ireland
- Praised by management for strong communication skills and being 'high potential'
Other:
- co-founded and ran business in teen years
- enjoyed three years primary education in Saudi Arabia
Personal interests:
- ski + snowboard fanatic
No spectacular extracurricular activities. (If I could just go back in time....!)
Post-MBA goals: transition to technology industry, either as entrepreneur or in strategic management position.
I plan to emphasize that I can bring cultural diversity, have had a strong professional growth path, and have materialized entrepreneurial ambitions at a young age.

Lars,
I think you could break into 1 or 2 of these schools, perhaps more. Your nationality is a somewhat unusual one among applicants, at least in my experience, and you certainly have a strong leadership-oriented resume. As you noted, your big weakness is the community side which will definitely hurt you at Wharton, Kellogg, and Stanford, and will argue against the "grand vision" that HBS likes to see in its applicants. Nevertheless, I think schools like NYU, Wharton (even given your extracurric's), and perhaps CBS could come through for you. If you could shift your focus a bit lower on the food chain you could include some outstanding schools where you'd have better odds.
