GMAT - yet to take, expecting 700+

I am trying to aim for top 20 US B-Schools as I want to pursue entrepreneurship. A doctorate has given me knowledge, now I want to learn the basics of entrepreneurship, so that I can come up with a start-up. I was thinking Darden, Michigan Ross, Rotman, Ivey, Schulich Sloan, Tuck, Kelley.

Please suggest.

Kind Regards,
Dr B.

Hello Drbroy88,

You have an interesting profile and a good initial list of target schools. For U.S. programs like Darden, Ross, and Tuck, you will definitely want to get into the 700s range with your GMAT score.

Something that jumps out to me is your post-MBA goal. Currently, your interest in entrepreneurship and startups is quite broad. While no one will hold you to your goals here, most schools want candidates to have clear and specific plans laid out before they arrive on campus. Goal development is part of Personal MBA Coach's support via our comprehensive services.

Your interest in yoga/Zumba and meditation/mindfulness can be leveraged in your applications to differentiate you from the rest of the applicant pool. The key here will be to make sure you are telling a consistent and compelling story (this is another cornerstone of our support).

Feel free to reach out to [email protected] to further discuss your candidacy! We work with candidates from a variety of less conventional backgrounds and would be happy to provide you with guidance throughout the application process.

Best,
Personal MBA Coach

Hi Gyanone and Team,

I have a full time experience of 4 years as an Assistant Professor and a have 10 years of freelancing experience. Yes, I freelanced along with my full time-job.

Kind Regards,
Dr. B

Hi Dr. B

Thanks for the response. That would imply 10+ years of post-qualification work experience. This may be on the higher side for most full-time MBA programs. The programs you have listed may not be out of considerations, but you should aim for a 720+ for those. We suggest you also look at programs such as IMD and the Sloan Fellows programs post taking your GMAT.

Hi Drbroy88,

Thank you for sharing your detailed profile. You have an impressive and diverse profile. Your background in physical education is remarkable, and it is the most notable aspect of your profile. Your academics are excellent, with many accomplishments. B-schools worldwide recognise the importance of encouraging diversity and inclusiveness in their MBA classrooms, which is why they insist on bringing together aspirants from various cultures and underrepresented classes into their cohort communities. In terms of your profile, you will need to demonstrate your diverse experience and accomplishments through your applications, parallel with acing the GMAT (720+). You must show the significance of the projects/workshops in which you participated, as well as instances in which you have held leadership roles, demonstrating the accountable and impactful leader in you. You will need to sort projects in order to show those that have the most impact, showing all of the values that a school requires.

For your post-MBA goals, I'd like to learn about your plans in detail. You mentioned entrepreneurship, but what is your specific vision? Make your post-MBA goals more specific, such as how you want to begin your journey and your long-term target. You may not be specifically asked to do so, but it is worth thinking about how you can link your goals to your previous experience and accomplishments. Adcoms want to know how you think about the future, what problems you've discovered with current systems, and how you plan to solve them for long-term change. So, think of the short-term and long-term goals carefully. This will make the story more orderly, logical, and concise, something the admissions committee will undoubtedly appreciate.

If you need any direction/guidance over any aspect of your application and have any specific concerns, you can ask us on the forum Ask MBA & Beyond.

Overall you have an impressive profile. What matters is connecting the dots and explaining your profile impactfully. The b-schools you have selected are fine, for your information Ross has waived the GMAT for the fall intake. You may want to read an article on Top business schools that are waiving GMAT/GRE test. You will get some insight, and if you fulfill the criteria, you can apply for a GMAT waiver.

If you’d like, we are happy to hop on a call with you sometime this week to discuss your profile in length and guide you wherever you feel stuck with your profile. Feel free to book a free session with us as per your convenience.

Let’s maximize your chances in Round 1 for fall intake

Cheers!
