Hello Experts, Hope everyone is doing well!

Kindly request you to evaluate my profile for MBA programs at NUS, NTU and SMU

Indian Male (29 year-old)

Post MBA: Management Consulting or Risk Consulting

10th-82%
12th-84%
B.tech from National Institute of Technology, 8.8 CGPA

GMAT Score-700(Q 48, V37, IR 3)

Work Experience: ~7-years(August,2014-present)

-->Role 1 - Senior Analyst
-Worked on Statistical Modelling in financial risk management domain, BFSI sector for UK client

-->Role 2 - Financial Risk Consultant
-Exposure to diversified risk consulting projects related to statistical modelling, model validation, economic capital calculation, regression models, time series modelling
-International experience working on shore in middle east region for 1.5 years directly with the C-level employees (CROs and CFOs)

-->Role 3 - Assistant Vice President (Switzerland based bank)
- Consistent exceptional performance with top ratings
- Built a 3 member team from scratch
- Gained expertise in various statistical softwares - R, SAS and Python

-->Role 4 - Senior Manager (Big 4)
- I am hopeful that this role will further strengthen my profile and increase my international exposure.

Extracurricular: (1) Physically active and play a variety of sports representing my team and company
(2) Secretary (highest position) of Music and Dramatics Club (College) and convener for the cultural festival held in the college bringing in sponsorships.
(3) In top 1% of the AIEEE test seekers across the country

I have a decent overall score however, a low score in IR (3 out of 8). I plan to pursue my MBA starting 2022. While I have ample amount of time, I want to be done with GMAT soon and focus on other projects. My focus for admission is mainly in the Singapore region (NUS/NTU/SMU).
Would this score suffice or should I take another attempt at the GMAT? Can the IR score be a deal breaker, especially for these three colleges? Anyone who has applied to NUS/NTU or has some experience in this area, do reach out!
Please feel free to suggest any other B Schools within Asia/Pacific region (preferably Singapore).

Hi PB12

Would suggest you retake, but not because of the IR score. While people have made it with scores around yours, a higher score here will certainly help given the competitive pool you are coming from. You also have time available at the current juncture to retake. Try for a 20+ point increase.

Hi GyanOne
Many Thanks for your valuable suggestion. I am totally aligned to what you have suggested. It makes sense to retake the test. I am a bit worried what if the next score is even lower! Human fear after all :)

PB12, a few thoughts on your profile evaluation:
  1. On the academic arc, the NIT pedigree and a healthy GPA is always a good starting point - which NIT are you from? In general, one can usually add 20-30 points to a given school's average to get a sense of the Indian GMAT average - more for NITians. While schools have been looking at IR scores, but we've not seen them being deal breakers as such. But given the perspective I shared, a retake can be worth it if you feel you can push the score higher.
  2. The professional profile sounds promising though it's tough to assess without the actual brand of your employers. Also important to understand in case any of these were short-lived. On-site exposure is always quite useful. Risk as a function tends to be under-represented in bschools. So make sure to articulate the business impact of your work, well.
  3. The ECs look just about ok especially after college. Schools look for clear evidence of impact delivered so think along those lines.
  4. For reasons mentioned here, we don't speculate on school selection or chances. That being said, there are very few top league programs in Asia as such and thus, INSEAD is always worth a shot - a higher score will help there further. You may also find this post on Singapore schools useful.

Hope this helps some.

Cheers,

Hi MG4MBACrystalBall
Many thanks for the detailed analysis. I did some research and found out that the average GMAT score for NUS is 670. Hence, 30-40 plus takes it to in line with what I scored. But you are absolutely correct. It will be worth giving a second try.
Honestly, personally I do not really see a point applying to INSEAD. May be because the academic fees is humongous! Hence, my focus for now is on the other colleges.

Hello PB12,

Thanks for the details.

Considering you have time at hand, we do not see any harm in you re-taking the GMAT; not only will this give you a chance to improve your IR score but also help "spike" the GMAT factor in your application; as you probably already know, the GMAT score expectations are always higher for Indian males coming from engineering backgrounds.

You may also consider adding HKUST to the list of schools you are looking at; INSEAD Singapore is also an option in case you are able to improve your GMAT score by 30-40 points.

All the best!

Hi ExpertsGlobal
Many thanks. I know B-schools consider us (male engineers) super humans ;). But that is because some of us have delivered results in the past. I will rather take this as a compliment from them.
Yes! HKUST can surely be added to my target list. Thanks again

It's certainly not a deal breaker but compared to your specific peer group (read IIT/NIT), it can potentially be. While the fee may be high, the immediate and longer term returns are likely to make up for it. Would still recommend you evaluate it deeper.

All the best.

Hello everyone,

Kindly request you to evaluate my profile for MBA programs at NUS, NTU and SMU:

24 Female, Indian
10th: 10CGPA ~ 95%
12th: 96%
Got into a top ranked college for Economics Honors. (2015-2018) However there my grades suffered massively. Got a 6.2 CGPA. Post that working as a Tax Analyst at EY for 3 years now. Also, undertaking a Executive PG Diploma in Data Science (2021-2022) wherein learning python, SQL, Tableau.
Expecting a 680 - 700 in the GMAT.

Can a good GMAT and good score in the diploma offset the low GPA? Do I've a shot at NUS, NTU, SMU?

Hi Preeti,

An above-average GMAT score can offset a low GPA. However, if you are targeting something in the range of 670-700, then that's not above average. You will need a 720+ score, esp at NUS and NTU. ALso working as a tax analyst can speak to your analytical skills, which you must ask your recommenders to highlight, and also demonstrate them in the resume.

Preeti10, will be good to understand the name of your college. Also, any reason for the low GPA.

The PG Diploma can be interesting provided it is being pursued from a good brand/place. If not, you may want to explore building a parallel transcript with courses on mbamath etc.

The profile details shared a too sketchy to do a deeper profile evaluation - the actual nature of your work and impact therein at EY; any career advancement; efforts outside the workplace. These and a lot more eventually go into making a solid profile.
