KELLOGG MBA

The application dates for 2021-22 are:

ROUND 1 Deadline: 15 September, 2021
Decision notification by: 8 December, 2021

ROUND 2 Deadline: 05 January 2022
Decision notification by: 23 March, 2022

ROUND 3 Deadline: 6 April, 2022
Decision notification by: 11 May, 2022

ALL APPLICATIONS SHOULD BE SUBMITTED ONLINE BY 5 p.m. CST

Essay Question:
Essay 1: Kellogg’s purpose is to educate, equip and inspire brave leaders who create lasting value. Provide a recent example where you have demonstrated leadership and created value. What challenges did you face and what did you learn? (450 words)
Our 5 Top TIPS:
1. Start by reflecting on the purpose of this leadership essay. From the blog of Kate Smith, Assistant Dean of Admissions and Financial Aid, on leadership: “We’re looking specifically for examples of spearheading change, striving for excellence or creating a lasting impact. We want our students to be the kind of people who aim to leave an innovative mark on their companies before and after Kellogg.” Mark the additional emphasis on ‘change’ and ‘innovation’.
2. Select the right example that projects you as a ‘brave’ leader, someone who is not afraid to challenge the status quo or to ‘spearhead change’. Also an example which demonstrates your ‘out of the box’ or innovative thinking.
3. Provide a ‘recent’ example. How recent is recent? Typically within three years is a good benchmark. If you are a recent graduate, we would suggest choosing a work example compared to one from your college.
4. Use a STAR framework to provide the example. Start with describing the Situation, covering context, the stakeholders and relationships. Explain the Task at hand or the objective in front of you. Highlight the leadership challenge involved in accomplishing this objective. Move to Action you took, or what you did to meet your objective. Remember to highlight the difficulties involved (challenges faced) in doing your work, especially around the people issues as the focus is on leadership. It is important to highlight what you thought and felt as you went about doing things. Wherever possible, bring out details on how you inspired, influenced and persuaded others to move in the desired direction.
5. Lastly, cover the Results or the outcome that was achieved. Given the focus, describe how the outcome created lasting value for the stakeholders involved.
Do not forget about your learning from this experience, ideally something which is generic and transferable across situations.

Essay 2:Q2. Values are what guide you in your life and work. What values are important to you and how have they influenced you? (450 words)
Our 5 Top TIPS:
1. Start by reflecting on the purpose of this essay. Kate Smith, Assistant Dean of Admissions and Financial Aid, explains this essay question in her blog, “Our goal this year is to uncover what motivates and inspires you. What drives you? How will this make you a meaningful member of the Kellogg community?”
2. Taking cues from the essay topic, the scope covers both, your personal and professional life.
3. If you struggle to identify the values that have guided you in your life, here is an approach on how to find some answers:
Identify some of the key decisions, accomplishments or experiences from your work or personal life.
Try answering the question for each of these: What motivated you, guided you or inspired you to make those decisions, seek those experiences or achieve those accomplishments.
Look for a pattern. Is there a value that touches across various items. You got your start.
4. This essay is NOT about generating a list of values. Restrict to 2-3 and substantiate these values with examples from your personal and professional life.
5. The last part of the essay is about how you will contribute to the Kellogg community. Your values will define your interests and career goals. Based on that, how will you engage with and contribute to the Kellogg community inside and outside the class.

One-Year applicants: Please discuss your post-MBA career goal, the current experience you will leverage to support the transition, and the Kellogg 1Y opportunities that will help you reach this goal. (250 words)

Reapplication Question:
Since your previous application, what steps have you taken to strengthen your candidacy? (250 words)

VIDEO Questions:
Video essay 1: Please introduce yourself to the admissions committee.
Video essay 2: What path are you interested in pursuing, how will you get there, and why is this program right for you?
Video essay 3: This question will be based on a challenge you've faced and what you've learned from it.

Recommendation Questions: TWO recos needed

1. Kellogg has a diverse student body and values students who are inclusive and encouraging of others with differing perspectives and backgrounds. Please tell us about a time when you witnessed the candidate living these values. (300 words)

2. How does the candidate's performance compare to those of other well-qualified individuals in similar roles? Please provide specific examples. (300 words)

3. Describe the most important piece of constructive feedback you have given the candidate. Please detail the circumstances and the applicant's response. (250 words)

Mandatory Essay Questions

Describe a situation in which you failed as a leader. What did you learn from it? (Word limit 300)

Our analysis:

The phrase to take note of is, “failed as a LEADER”. Leadership is always in context of other people and applicants must take a not of this when attempting this essay.
So, the adcom wants you to tell of a situation where you were working with other people and failed to do something/ overlooked doing something that had its repercussions. An example could be not listening to your team members’ ideas for reasons you thought best at that time, but this later had a negative impact on your objective. Another example could be failing your team or their expectations from you/ not representing their interests well enough in some way.

Whatever your example be- one major part of the essay would be the self-reflection and analysis of what you did wrong. The best way to grow for a leader is to learn from their own mistakes, so let the adcom see that your failure offered you a learning experience which helped you improve and gain success in the future. To address this second bit, you may write a short example of another similar situation at a later time where you were able to implement your learnings.

The essay’s short word limit makes it imperative that you write to the point. A mistake applicants often make is to delve too deep into the situation building. As a result, they rush through the meatier parts of the storytelling, which is what they did wrong, what repercussions it had on others and what self-reflection did they go through. So, remember to economize your words to stay on track and cover every bit of the story.

Optional Essay
Is there any additional information that is critical for the Admissions Committee which has not been covered elsewhere in this application? (i.e. re-application, health, grades, etc.) (Word limit 50)

3. What skills and experience do you think you already possess that will help you with your post MBA career plans and will make you stand out in front of potential employers? (Word limit 100)

4. What is your plan B if you are not able to secure your ideal job post MBA? (Word limit 50)
