Hi, everyone. I am a URM woman with 4 years WE and a 770 GMAT. I also have two bachelor's degrees.
My first degree was in biomedical engineering on the pre-med track. I absolutely hated it, faced some family issues, and ended with a ~2.5 GPA. My second one was in business admin and finance, and I got a 3.95 GPA there. They were not at the same school or at the same time.
How should I report these on applications? Could I list the degree with the more relevant major and better GPA first? I'm most worried about how schools report GPAs for their class profile, and which of my GPAs they'd be able to use.
As I understand, you will have to report both degrees as you would have spent 3-4 years completing the first degree. Not reporting it will be questionable as it will show a large gap on your resume. So, here's what I would advise:
1. Look at the application holistically to address this (rather than viewing it as a sole mention of your degrees and their positioning on the application form).
2. Use the optional essay to explain why you had to do two degrees. IMO, showing reflection and learning from this experience will be important- for example, evaluating your choices better before committing yourself, introspecting on your goals- you would want to mitigate any doubts in the adcom's minds that your MBA experience can also turn to be similar. Secondly, don't let the first degree sound totally useless- show what you learned from there, and what transferable skills/ knowledge did you attain (igf any) that helped in your next degree. Otherwise, one is likely to wonder why you stuck around for 3-4 years.
3. Tie in the application - your work experience, goals, resume and references with the business education to show continuity after the first misadventure.
Basically, for building a strong application, you should be able to communicate that you have found your path since the first undergrad degree and are now committed to achieving your goals that relate to this path.
hope that helps!
