Hi club-
Would greatly appreciate advice on how I can position my profile competitively for top-10 programs. Here's some quick bullets on how it would shape-up today, with some questions / concerns I've got on building it further.
Let me first state that I am not interested in consulting services, just advice. Please do not message me for this. Thank you.
** = concern area
Education:
-Undergrad was Liberal Arts, Economics Major.
-Top-10 (this year 13th but in the general highly-selective bracket) Lib Arts school in US.
**Grades & Scores:
-Undergrad 3.1
-First 2 years was ~3.4.
-Reason for drop was combo of things; significant personal matters + running my own company + recruiting for bulge bracket investment banking all formed a perfect storm and dragged it down Jr. + Sr. year.
-GMAT 730 (96th percentile).
Work:
-Interned at a Bulge Bracket for IB division.
-Took offer with a top-4 management consulting firm (hint: it's color is green) in venture, emerging technology & space (think rockets).
-Experience has been very unique - tech scouting for investments & acquisitions, built firm's tech startup evaluation methodology (for the global firm), worked with C-level executives on many strategic problem sets, etc.
-Performance has been top-10% for 3 years and counting, high-impact work, and hit early promotion twice in a row.
-Will have recs from my teams that are reflective of this record.
Volunteer work:
-Focused on sports (I was an athlete in undergrad) for disabled. Goal is to help advance equitable access to athletics for historically excluded folks, I deem this important personally as sports brought much into my life.
-Also looking to get involved with climate change non-profit work and will have this in place come application season.
Narrative
-I'm getting an MBA to move directly into emerging tech & venture, building on my career experience & passion and allowing me to reach the next step in my career, both at my current firm and opportunities that may follow long-term. This will be refined but that's the overall reason / narrative.
Questions / Concerns:
-Concern: My GPA is quite low and this is my main issue. I have reasons for this as stated above that I can explain in the application, but concerned this is not going to be sufficient. GMAT will compensate but not completely offset as 730 is great, but still at average of top-10 pool. Work experience + recs all great, not sure how heavy that factors in.
-Question: If I were to build an alt. transcript via in-person university or online (e.g. HBX), what am I realistically going to need to do? I assume 1 'A' for quant and done is not going to cut it and I will have to take multiple courses, but how many?
-Question: Other option is a 2nd round of GMAT to hit 750+, which I think would do the trick, but it's been 6 months and it was an absolute grind getting to 730. Thoughts? Anyone do this twice / is it faster 2nd time around with a lower learning curve?
-Any other ways to offset the low GPA? Volunteer work is of course important, anything outside of that?
Thanks for reading and much appreciated for those who can offer insight based on experience or expertise.
