So I have been accepted at both Georgetown and Maryland.

I really like everyone I have met at Maryland and know it is a great school and I would probably be very happy there. However, there is just something about Georgetown that makes it very attractive.

Within the MBA community both Maryland and Georgetown are highly regarded with perhaps Georgetown with a slight edge. However, if you talk to people who don't stay up to date on the latest B-school news every assumes Georgetown is a far superior school.

In the big picture, how important are rankings if the people you are talking to have no idea what they are and just have their pre-conceived notions about a school? Which is of course inevitable during the course of ones career.

I was in the exact same situation as you and even though Maryland offered me more money I just decided on Georgetown for the reasons you stated. Georgetown does have a MUCH better brand name and has, in my opinion, a greater potential to rise in the rankings, especially with the new building coming up.

I agree with you that students at MD are great, but my impression was that G'town students were more polished. I came away very impressed from the admitted students weekend and it sealed my decision.

Let us know what you decide. Might see you at G'town in the fall.

I believe Georgetown is an up-and-comer as a B-school and has brand advantages over Maryland. We all know that "brand" -- reputation -- matters more than whether a school is #21 vs. #26 in some ranking. One real bottom line is to compare the average salaries of the MBAs coming out of each school and which firms are each schools' top recruiters. Either way you will be going to a strong program.
