Hello,
This past week I have been offered a job with my current company in a different function. My goal is to apply for the best MBA program I can get into for the 2008 – 2010 class (or later if necessary). To help meet this goal, I’m asking if taking an offered job change seems like a good idea. For how knowledgeable you are on these things, I believe you are one of the best people to ask!
For a bit of background, I graduated in May 2006 and have been working as a system administrator for my current company while waiting for a security clearance. Also, I have been working for this company since 2004 in a role with decent responsibility (only IT person in a 250 person company for a 6 month period while part-time in college, able to lead online marketing campaigns, got to help hire/interview my boss, etc.) Over the past few years I’ve been enjoying tech less and less, and have become partly fluent in finance.
Since there hasn’t been much to do in tech here lately, and I’m really just sitting around waiting for my clearance to go through (already 18 months and counting…), I offered to help in Business Development. Instead of just help, they offered me a full time gig looking for new business and helping to write classified/unclassified technical proposals. The potential for negotiation, meeting with clients, and using financial analysis to decide on new opportunities seems like a better pre-MBA career than systems engineering/administration.
My post-MBA career goal is in international finance, probably investment banking or something with less hours. I’ve tried to apply to numerous jobs in the financial world but my undergraduate degree of IT from a little-known school (George Mason University, way to go me for screwing around in high school!) has really blocked me from jobs of comparable responsibility to what I have now.
So, do you think showing a move from IT to Business Development (while maintaining a decently high salary for my age) with a high-level security clearance would help get into a top financial program? On a side note, I have been taking many finance classes lately, including a certificate of business administration from Georgetown University. I'm also a volunteer for the AARP Tax-Aide program, which performs tax returns for low-income individuals.
Thank you so much!
