Hi there - I'm hoping to get an outside review of my MBA profile. Appreciate any/all feedback:
Age/Gender: 28 year old male.
Nationality: American-born Chinese.
GMAT: 710 (44Q, 42V, 8IR, essay score pending) - I plan to retake to aim for 730+.
Undergraduate education: 3.87 GPA at a top 20
public university in the US. Was involved in several extracurricular activities but not in any leadership positions (e.g. was an equity research analyst for my university's endowment fund, participated in Wall Street prep program, several finance clubs).
Work experience: 6 years total. First two years were in a middle office asset/wealth management rotational analyst program at a top 3 (i.e. very strong brand name) bank in NYC who is also a feeder into Columbia. Next two years were in asset management/investment consulting at the same bank, where my team advised on and managed investments for endowments, pensions, and high net worth individuals. Was promoted from analyst > associate > assistant VP during my time at the bank. Currently coming up on 2 years at a large private equity fund of funds also in NYC in a portfolio construction (think top down asset allocation and portfolio monitoring) role; not a deal team role. Was promoted from associate to senior associate at the PE fund of funds after one year.
Professional certifications: Chartered Alternative Investment Analyst (CAIA) - passed the exam in Fall 2020.
International experience: Would characterize this as pretty light. Have mostly gone abroad for travel/leisure although my current firm is HQ'd in London and I spend 2-3 weeks of the year working out of the London office as most of my direct team is actually based there.
MBA motivation: The ultimate goal is to try to break into a PE/VC deal team or land some sort of investment analyst role at a large foundation/endowment/pension. I know it's difficult to get buyside positions directly from MBA so would be prepared to do Investment Banking as well.
Recs: Should be able to secure a strong recommendation from my direct manager (who's an INSEAD alum).
Volunteering/leadership: I'm on the Diversity & Inclusion Committee at my current firm. I also was previously a mentor for an underprivileged high school student in NYC to help him navigate college applications, etc. from 2020-2021.
MBA target schools: NYU Stern, Columbia, Wharton and HBS (appreciate the latter two are probably reaches).
