Hello everyone,
I am a 23 M Indian. I am applying for a few deferred MBA programs this spring. I would appreciate your advice on my profile below-
Undergraduate qualifying law program (L.L.B) at a top 5 National Law University in India
Co-founder, India's first legal aid citizenship cell (We have advised and helped hundreds of migrants in India with their citizenship and residence applications, including representing them at the Foreigners Legal Tribunal in India)
Heading to a big law firm's Insolvency & restructuring team in Mumbai (India does not allow foreign law firms to operate in India, therefore, we have large local law firms)
Admitted to the Bar in India
GRE- 170Q 170V 5AWA
Started a virtual arbitration platform for Insolvency matters that decreased the average time for disposal of a case by 10 times (Had to be shut down because regulatory changes made it illegal to offer private dispute resolution service in India)
Co-founder, India's first legal aid citizenship cell (We have advised and helped hundreds of migrants in India with their citizenship and residence applications, including representing them at Foreigners Legal Tribunal in India)
Represented India at the United Nations in a cross border insolvency conference
Multiple Research paper publications in reputed journals (one of my papers that was published in a Yale Law journal has been cited 50+ times)
Co-authored a textbook on Insolvency and bankruptcy law that is now prescribed as a textbook in at least 2 universities in India.
Internship experience in India, the USA, UK, and Italy (all law-related internships, including one at the United Nations)
Short-term Goals- Use my Insolvency and restructuring law experience to pivot to the domain of turnaround consulting. Interested in joining either boutique turnaround consulting firms such as A&M, Alix Partners, or turnaround and restructuring teams of Big 4/MBB.
Long-term Goal- Aspire to secure appointments as a Bankruptcy Trustee, a role regulated by the court and requiring proficiency in insolvency law and management. Additionally, I aspire to establish a boutique consulting firm that provides a blend of legal and managerial support to struggling businesses.
Target Schools- All M7 schools.
All advice is welcome. If you can share your opinion on the following questions, I'd be grateful.
Do you think my goals are reasonable?
Would taking any quant-based course eg- MBA Math add to my profile? I am worried that adcoms might be concerned about my lack of quantitative skills.
Should I even apply to HSW? I am not sure if my profile is competitive for these schools.
What are my odds at non-HSW M7 schools?

- The academic arc is solid given the NLU background which would be known in international MBA circles. How has your GPA been? The eye-popping GRE score will ensure any concerns about your quant skills are put to rest frankly. MBA Math may help you fundamentally but not so much for admit perspective.
- The professional experiences you've had in terms of diverse and international experiences should hold you in good stead. While the upcoming role sounds promising, you may also want to explore roles in consulting firms - they do hire NLU grads; in case you haven't tried so already.
- The platforms and citizenship cell can present a good, and fairly diverse extracurricular arc. These may be relevant to use in your post-MBA goals pitch and a consulting role may not necessarily be the only thing you can look at. The longer term aspiration is ok but not a 'classic' MBA profile - make sure you address why/how an MBA helps in that regard.
- For reasons mentioned here, we don't speculate on school selection or chances. That being said, with what I've seen, there is sufficient merit in targeting the top options, including the top 3. Deferred MBA programs in our experience are a great way to have an additional shot at top schools.
