It sounds like you have a lot of great past experiences, especially leadership-type experiences. Definitely emphasize these! And your book makes you unique... Definitely use this as a way to demonstrate your passion and initiative. It's especially valuable to you because it should help round out your application and show that you're more than "just an engineer" -- if you wrote a book and appeared in the media, you probably also have some soft skills, too.
I don't think any of those schools is out of reach for you. But hopefully you have some leadership/community involvement since college that you can point to. Also, I think you're doing the right thing by taking a calculus class now... Will help to balance out your low GPA.
Dartmouth is still taking apps until Apri, but keep in mind that space in the class will be VERY limited by the time you apply. So, your odds are slim. I would actually recommend taking the extra 7-8 months between now and the fall to strengthen your application, doing the things I mentioned above. The extra year of work experience will help, too, since you're still on the young side of the average age for an MBA student.
