Work Experience
Close to 2 years at a boutique Securities Litigation firm. Worked on one high profile case and another semi high profile. However, I really didn't do much. Only reviewing documents and mundane reporting.
I was fed up with practicing law and decided to pack up two suit cases, bought a one way ticket to Japan (where I had done study abroad in law school) and moved here to look for a job. I feel this should be a good story for applications. Do you agree?
I found a job with a company that was a large research information provider, but is now transforming itself into a solutions provider.
I have been with the company for a year and a half, but two and a half by the time enter my MBA program. I am the only foreigner in an office of 35 Japanese people. Therefore, my role with the company is difficult to describe because I'm basically the foreign guy. Kind of, a jack of all trades master of none. To make it easy here is my progression in the Company.
November 2005 - Present Account Manager for Global Clients
Increased sales by 16%
Responsible for all English language customer support functions
Responsible for all English language marketing materials
Handle day to day legal issues such as contract drafting and interpretaton
May 2005 - Present Manager for Distributors in Both Japan and Korea
Manage a total of 6 distributors (3 in Japan 3 in Korea)
Manage all product offerings for the company in Korea
Have increased sales in Korea by more than 25%
Maintained sales in Japan (These are for print and microfilm products which are becoming obsolete so maintaining the level is quite good)
Community Experience
No leadership (I know this hurts), but I am active. I'm a member for the American Chamber of Commerce in Japan, Foreign Lawyers Association of Japan, and take part in a church group that makes food to be delivered to homeless people. I also was active while in law school with various organizations.
Other
Conversant in Japanese
Compete in Triathlons
Did an internship with a large Japanese law firm and the Tokyo office of PwC while in law school
Why an MBA and why now?
I really want to move into management/strategy consulting. Specifically, I would like to move into a consulting role in the Asia Pac region (Tokyo/Seoul/Hong Kong). However, I lack the brand name on my resume and the quantitative skills necessary.
Now is the time because of the nature of my role with my current company I have already hit the ceiling in terms of advancement. In addition, I have helped remedied numerous long standing problems at the company so quite frankly I’m getting bored with my position.
Recommendations
One from the Asia Pac Sales Manager for my current company.
One from my current boss/managing director of the company I work for. He is a Wharton graduate.
Target Schools
Right now, I just have Cornel and Wharton as definites. I was thinking Columbia and Michigan too. I have kicked HBS as a possibility. I know I'm not superhuman enough for HBS, but do you think I'm unique enough.
Sorry to burden you with so much info. If I missed anything please let me know.
Thanks,
