760 GMAT
36 y.o. White Male
GPA: 3.2, physics and statistics
Biotech engineer
Current Salary: 150,000
GOALS: likely biotech product management, then entrepreneurship
GREEN FLAGS:
- Normal career progression
- Experience at F500 and startups
- Worked at a startup developing a treatment for a chronic health condition I have (inspiring!)
- I have a professional certification that took about as much study time as a CFA certification
- I have a couple of pending patent applications. I’ll be able to work on these businesses in MBA entrepreneurship classes.
RED FLAGS:
- I have a chronic physical health condition. It took a few years to get a diagnosis and get my symptoms under control. That’s why I’m so old: I wasn’t comfortable doing an MBA when my health was still unpredictable. These days, my condition is predictable and manageable.
- Took 6 years to finish undergrad, 2 of those years at a community college. EXPLANATION: I had little parental support during undergrad and had to work crappy jobs while in school. I was ready to graduate after 5 years, but couldn’t find a real job, so I took minimal classes in year 6. To finally get a job, I removed the community college from my resume (to make it look like I was just a regular 4th year student).
- No promotions. EXPLANATION: Promotions are slow in my job function. I always just changed jobs to get a pay raise. I can probably get a promotion to manager in the spring.
- A couple of jobs that lasted only 6-12 months, each followed by a few months of unemployment. Clearly, something went wrong in these jobs. EXPLANATION: I’m not sure how I’ll explain this one.
QUESTIONS:1) Where am I a competitive candidate? Is this realistic?:
- REACH: MIT, Kellogg, Ross
- TARGET: Duke, UCLA, USC, Oxbridge
- SAFETY: Vanderbilt, Minnesota, Johns Hopkins
2) Think I’ll get a scholarship?
3) Will the adcoms try to pigeonhole me into a PT program because I’m old? I prefer a FT program because I want a scholarship.
4) Are my GOALS ok? Will the adcoms want me to target consulting or banking because my GMAT is high?
5) Should I even mention the chronic health condition? It’s such a big part of my life, but I’m worried it will freak out the adcoms.
6) Are my EXPLANATIONS for my RED FLAGS ok?
7) Will I be auto-dinged if I confess to being fired in a job? I got fired once because I raised some safety concerns that freaked out the CEO. The CEO/managers made up an obviously fake story about why I was being fired. How to address this? Should I just say “it was a bad culture fit”?
THANK YOU SO MUCH!
Hi
mba4grampa,
Your GMAT scores are excellent. About your profile, we'll have to brainstorm the essentials of your profile to highlight in your supplemental essays. You have a good chance of securing a scholarship, however, we'll have to weave an out-of-the-box storyline in your essays.
To answer your questions:
3) Your age can be a hurdle, however, Adcoms will not push you to go for the PT program if you offer an upright justification in your essays.
4) Your goals are fine, but we may have to elaborate on them in your applications.
5) About your health condition, you can speak about it in your applications. However, our MBA experts would like to first understand your health condition and then help you decide.
6) Your red flags explanation is okay, however, a few details seem unclear. Our MBA consultants would like to speak with you in detail and answer your queries in person. You can
schedule a free profile consultation call with our experts or connect directly over a call at +91 7780769732
7) You will not be auto-dinged. We recommend discussing this in person and drawing a strategy to present it effectively in your applications.
We look forward to speaking with you
