If you do not plan to attend the interview, you should surely respond with an email politely declining the invite. No one can tell what this school's process is, but surely not responding leaves a very bad and unprofessional impression of you. You may not care at this point, but B-school academia is a small world, so you never know when you might run into the same set of people again.

Hi all! I recently received an interview invite from an MBA program and need some help navigating an unusual situation.

For Context:
I’ve already accepted an offer from a top MBA program that I plan to attend. However, when I originally applied for scholarship funding, I included several other MBA programs in my application — just to be safe — and now, as part of that scholarship administrative process, I’m required to provide formal rejection letters from all those schools.

Challenges:
One of those schools recently invited me to interview, but I’ve decided not to move forward with that program. I'm wondering what typically happens if I simply don't respond to the interview scheduling email.

My Question:
If I don’t attend or reply to the interview invite, will the school eventually send a rejection letter by default? Or do some programs follow up or just leave things open without sending any official rejection letter?

Note:
I know this is kind of a niche case — and I’m definitely not trying to show off or waste anyone’s time. It’s just a weird administrative requirement where I need a formal rejection to complete the paperwork. Any insight or past experience would really help. Thanks!

I think you will receive a rejection letter eventually.

You could possibly tell the b-school where you are admitted that you withdrew your application to the other b-school as you already admission from them. Hopefully that should resolve it

every b-school follows a different process and its hard to tell what they will do - send a reject letter or feel rejected themselves :)

You should go ahead and withdraw your application and inform the b-school you plan to attend. As per my understanding they should accept what you tell them, as the rejection letter may only come later in the day when they release decisions for all other applicants.

It may suffice to send the admit b-school a copy of the email where you bid goodbye to the interview b-school. But, you should do that only if they ask for it, not proactively.

Just to confirm — if I withdraw my application by email, will that still result in a formal rejection letter being sent automatically (or during decision date)?
I’m in a situation where I really need the rejection letter for admin reasons, so I want to be sure. Have you (or anyone you know) seen a case like that where a withdrawn app still got an official “rejected” email? Just trying to be extra certain 🙏
