Thanks a lot for the input. I realize my essays are going to be a big hinging point for potential success of my application thats why I really want to focus on 2 or 3 schools that fit my career goals and are not totally beyond my reach. I wasn't going to waste my effort trying for H/S/W. I have seen several people spend a huge amount of time on applications on those with weak profiles and no real shot to get in...I think my time and energy would be much better spent at attempting another school in the top 10-15 where I would have a fighting chance.

CMU sounds like a really good fit, the fact that its a strong engineering school too helps. With the what I am hoping to go into I think a school with a strong engineering reputation will be more valuable for me than a school strong for IB. My wife actually was thinking if I go back she may get a masters in comp sci or to go for graphic design, both of which I think CMU has one of the best programs in the country so that might be a huge selling point to her...downside is her heart set on Boston where all our friends and family live vs. going to Pittsburgh.

I live in NH and actually a friend of mine lives right down the street from Dartmouth and its a beautiful area. A wonderful small New England town and has some great skiing near by. Its probably the area most like where we live now that has a top level grad school but it is also probably the one place my dog would enjoy more than my wife. Its one of the schools I may attempt for a R1, along with MIT and one other (CMU sounds like a great option), that way if I dont get in to it I still can go for a backup or two in a later round.

riverripper,

Sorry for the delayed reply; some glitches with the GMAT Club site. I'm glad my suggestions resonate with you. Your strategy sounds solid to me. Good to know you have a little flexibility as to location.

Good luck,

UPDATE: GMAT score and experience strengthened...new schools?

GMAT: 740 (48Q/42V)
Academics
- BS in Marine Engineering with Facilities Engineering Minor from a specialized maritime school
- 3.4 GPA top 10% of class and %5 for major. Weak sophomore year brought me down but had Avg 3.7 over final two years.
- Every year I spent 2 months on large ships sailing to different areas of the world.
Coast Guard Licensed engineer.

Full time Work experience
I worked for the Department of the Navy as a nuclear engineer for 5 years (6 at matriculation).
- 2 years of work experience as an Assistant Nuclear Test Engineer
- 2 years as a Nuclear Refueling Facilities Engineer.
- 1 year as a Lead Nuclear Refueling Facilities Engineer.
Having spent more time reading what they are looking for and evaluating what my work entails I have several solid examples of improvements I have made to our work that have made significant improvements with both the process and personnel performance. My department head is all about a few of the things I managed to get implemented...its tough with the government of doing things to get changes done. Solid statistics to back up the improvements to be sited in recommendations.

Leadership:
- Undergrad:
I attended a military academy (not federal service). So as an upperclassman I was an officer and did all the usual military school things; inspections of underclassman and their rooms, ran cleaning stations, ran watches, sat on discipline boards...
- Work:
Leadership has expanded due to a restructuring of responsibilities in my area. Now have a much larger role with our security element.
I am pretty sure I have enough solid examples to show good leadership at work and during college.

Extracurricular
- Over the past few years my time has been consumed with planned a wedding and remodeling my house...seriously anyone who has done either realizes how time consuming they are.
- In college, I helped start a fishing/outdoors club and a photography club.
- Was a ski coach for 4 years
- Competed in freestyle ski events, big air and half pipe.
- Avid photographer

Community activities
- Honestly, unfortunately outside of work and completely renovating a 150 year old house I have no time to do any volunteering. I see this as and lack of a brand name undergrad as my huge weak points Hoping if I get interviewed that its with a newly wed who owns an antique home.

Long term career goals - clarified these and have a better plan.
Would like to go into general management in the renewable energy field. Specifically nuclear since that is what I am most knowledgeable/interested in and will provide the most logical career path for me at this point. Helps that companies are starting to apply for new reactor licenses so there should be plenty of growth. I am looking at schools that have strong GM programs, having something related to what I want in the area would help as examples. Exelon (largest nuclear operator) headquartered in Chicago, Westinghouse is in Pittsburgh, and General Electric is in CT, so its near NYC and Boston. Since I am targeting schools in these areas its nice to know there are things around there related to my goals.

My target schools -
The wife has decided its time for a change for her too. Just doesn't want to move south of the Mason Dixon line. So the list expands...

Northwestern/Chicago, MIT, Tuck, NYU, CMU, and a safety if I must.

riverripper,

Congrats on the strengthened profile. I think you have a decent shot at all those schools. Your lack of community will hurt, but perhaps you can spin your Navy career as a 'public service' commitment (clearly it is), and they'll give you sufficient slack there if the rest of your app is strong, which it seems to be. Maybe add Michigan, Yale, and Haas to your list? I know Ross and Yale have some energy-related courses.

Good luck,

Thanks for the help...I looked a Michigan because I know a few people that have gone there and it seems like a good school I would have a strong chance at getting into. The only problem is my wife works in software and Detriot isn't exactly a high tech hub.

Once again you provide an invaluable service to us all here. I am looking forward to getting your book that I just ordered.
