MoonTrack Don’t be swayed by the illusion that soft skills like negotiation alone will get you into consulting. That is not how it works, which is why doing your research to understand the fundamentals of various functions in business/post-MBA recruiting is very important. Consulting firms are not hiring you just because you can “talk well.” They evaluate structured thinking, problem-solving ability, business judgment, and how you approach ambiguous situations.
Think about what value you will bring as an Indian lawyer in a global MNC, that too based out of India. It is not easy to answer this question at this stage. You need to research and look up people who have followed a similar career pivot or trajectory. Where did they start post-MBA? Did they move into consulting, compliance, risk, policy, or strategy roles? What kind of firms hired them? This will help you build a realistic view of the roles you can target. Also, understand how different functions actually work. For example, in consulting, you will be solving cross-industry business problems, often unrelated to law. In corporate roles, your legal background may be more relevant in areas like regulatory strategy, contract management, or risk advisory. If you are thinking about finance roles, you need to assess whether you have the quantitative and valuation skills required, or if additional upskilling is needed.
What kind of business do you want to open in the future? Be specific. How will your law degree come into play in the short, mid, and long term? Also spend time understanding how MBA recruiting actually works. Most top firms hire for very specific roles and look for signals that you can perform from day one. That means your pre-MBA story, your internships during the MBA, and your skill stack all need to align. You cannot rely on the MBA alone to create that shift.
What you are thinking is very vague at the moment, so please put in some effort to deeply reflect on what you want to achieve and how your previous experience can act as an enabler rather than a barrier.

Best wishes

I am a lawyer in India. I completed my BALLB from a prestigious national law university in 2019 and now practicing as a civil attorney in an attorney''s office. I am thinking to switch my career now towards business administration and for that I am planning to enroll as full time MBA student . The reason I am switching- well I want to learn how corporates work since i want to open my own business after gaining some international experience. As an international, what are the prospects after MBA. What industry should i target? Is my decision wise? Any other suggestions are welcome. My age is 29. I am thinking of consulting roles since the negotiation skills i have learnt can be of some use there.
