Case competitions can be helpful, demanding a good number of hours but over 1-2 weeks, but it signals strategic thinking, teamwork under pressure, and real business problem-solving, qualities business schools screen for, and participating in even 2-3 competitions over your college years gives you strong material for essays and interviews.
You can also go for any social impact role, and the essence should be initiative and continuity. Partnering with an NGO or a local community organization, consistently over a year, tells a compelling story if you can demonstrate that you drove or improved something. Teaching underprivileged students, running digital literacy workshops, or leading a rural survey project, any of these work, provided you can articulate your specific contribution and its outcome.
Other strong low-time options include taking a leadership position in your college's finance, entrepreneurship, or consulting club, organizing events, heading a committee, or running a student podcast, all of which count.
At the end, the holistic view of your profile matters, and it should align with your "why MBA, why now, why this school", backed by leadership experiences that demonstrate you have already started thinking and acting like a future business leader.
All the best.
