Do I have a decent chance with the current GMAT score in schools such as UVA, Gtown and UMD since they are regional for me. I am not sure if I will be able to get 40 point increase. I would rather devote that time to my essays. Does that make sense?

I am looking to apply this fall for 2008. My numbers are not stellar, but good work experience.

Profile:
Age:28
B.S in Computer Engineering GPA: 2.5/4.0
M.S in Computer Engineering GPA: 3.6/4.0
GMAT: 680 (46 M, 38 V)

Work Exp:
6 years of Defense/Aerospace Industry experience as an Engineer. Lead design teams through successful projects; demonstrated team building and leadership skills. Multiple activities at work such as mentorship to junior engineers etc.

Extra-curricular:
Adjunct Professor and adviser to the Graduate Engineering Dept of a regional university; founded a brand new course.

Career Goals:
Career Changer. Interested in M&A/Strategy advisory.

I am planning to apply to 5 schools.

Question:

Given my GPA
1. Do I stand a realistic chance getting into an elite school H/S/C etc?
2. What are my chances in the Top 20 schools?

vt2000,

Based on what I know about you I would say your chances at elite schools are small, as in very small. You will have a shot at several top 20 schools, however, and can largely neutralize your undergrad GPA by raising your GMAT score another 40 points or so. If you do, Michigan, Duke, Viriginia, Cornell, CMU, and UNC are the top 20 schools where your odds will probably be greatest.

Good luck,

vt2000,

Yes, I think you will be competitive at UVa and you can be optimistic about Georgetown and Maryland.

Good luck,
