Hi,
In line with the steady stream of requests for profile evaluation for the upcoming admission season – here’s mine. Would be really helpful if you could voice your thoughts/ comments. Without getting into too much detail, I’ve bullet-ized the key points for your perusal.
The Basics: Indian/ male/ Electronics Engineering undergrad/ 26 (27 by Fall 2008)
The Essentials: Management Consultant/ 6 years exp (by Fall 2008)
The Numbers:
1. GMAT 710 (49Q 38V) (PS: I am a little disappointed with the score as I was aiming for about 30 points higher than what finally popped up on my screen. Guess can’t do anything about it now). AWA: 6.0
2. GPA: 1st class with distinction/ Grade A/ 4.0
Career/Academic USPs:
1. Rapid promotions: Was a project manager of an 18 people multi geography project at my last firm within 3 years of my undergrad education. Got promoted once already within my new firm. Will be coming up for another promotion this year end (fingers crossed!) – with luck, would become a Principal at my firm.
2. International experience: Worked on three continents. Lived on two.
3. Work experience in diverse sectors including telecom, media, pharma and financial services.
4. Academics: Top 10% of graduating class consistently – from the day I started to study. National honors on high school exams (finished within the 0.1% of students)
Other selling points:
1. Extensive extra curriculars right from school days, including regional and national level participation. Original play has aired on national radio. Participation in dramatics on national TV and original short stories published in children’s’ magazine. Original plays have aired during many college/ school fests.
2. Associate editor of the college magazine
3. Leadership in various posts including elected positions. Held positions of School fine arts secretary and College Placements coordinator – both positions adjudged by popular vote in elections for the student community.
4. Extensive interaction with visiting companies on college campus to negotiate the day status for recruiting companies on campus.
5. Co-founder and project lead for a Non-profit initiative that provides pro-bono consulting support for initiatives across the developing world. (We’re the process of completing our first project in Kenya)
The Maybes (aka not decided if I should point these aspects out as these may be construed as positive or negative!):
1. Working on my first fiction novel currently. It’s about 300 pages through with another 300 or so to go – but between my 5 days a week travel work schedule and GMAT – I haven’t really gotten around to do anything with it.
2. Not sure about this but digging around in pay comparison sites shows that my pay compares very favorably to the average person at my level. Demonstrates higher value?
The Why MBA question: Two primary reasons:
1. Entrepreneurship. Build a consulting firm – one that uses a global operating model more effectively. For this I need to gain insight on the financial aspects, the investment cycles and gain perspective on the nitty-gritty’s of the Management consulting domain.
2. Philanthropic goals. Create a non-profit that supports philanthropic activities in developing nations across the world. The idea is to create a better and enhanced version of the ‘pilot experiment’ that I’m conducting with the non-profit that I’m currently involved with.
Target schools: I’ll be applying to only five full time programs – HBS, Stanford, Wharton, MIT and Insead. The preference is in that exact order as well. Obviously, HBS and Stanford look to be a stretch with the less-than-stellar GMAT score – but hey no harm in applying, right?
Any words of advice, comments or maybe a light rebuke?
Thank you!
