Paul,
I would appreciate if you can take a look at my profile and provide some feedback about my chances in below mentioned schools and critique on what my weaknesses are and how can I mitigate them.
1. Demographics:
Indian male, age 30 yrs, living in US for last 7 years.
2. Education:
Bachelor of Engineering in Production Engg. , India (75%, passed with honors)
Master of Science in Computer Science, Syracuse University, NY (3.75 GPA), was on scholarship as a Research Assistance.
3. GMAT: 660 (86%, 44/73% Q, 38/85% V, 4.5 AWA)
I screwed up in the Quant section due to 5 minutes lost in a unscheduled break which I was under the impression was a scheduled break between sections. I have heard the primary purpose of GMAT score is to measure your ability to endure the academic rigor of a business school, I have a proven record in that regard (at least in my mind) as I have a Master’s degree in computer science with 3.75 GPA and was awarded a scholarship for my academic achievements in graduate school.
4. Work Experience:
5 years of work experience. I am a development consultant at Microsoft and help Microsoft’s premier customers with their development efforts by optimizing their current development processes, bringing different teams together to collaborate effectively, providing best practices advice and providing tactical and strategic support to help them meet their project deadlines. Prior to this role I was involved in providing global support and training Engineers at various international Microsoft sites as a subject matter expert that included several technologies and travel to Europe, South America and with in North America at short notices and resolving production down technical issues which local support personnel needed help with. I have an extensive experience in analyzing problems under pressure (where every hour of downtime is causing thousands of dollars to be lost in revenue) and breaking down complex problems in to smaller pieces and providing root cause analysis of issues.
5. Extracurricular:
I have started a summer camp at Microsoft which aims to increase awareness of Math and science in high school students. We bring these students from local schools to Microsoft campus and expose them to the career possibilities in technology and dispel the image that technology is only for geeks.
I am a local coordinator for an International student exchange program where I try to find host families for International students; these families are kind enough to provide exchange students with food, shelter and a family environment for two years.
6. Why MBA:
To acquire skills and tools needed to start a company of my own. Learn to approach a problem in multiple ways and to inspire teamwork. I am joining an EMBA program this Fall at McCombs but I really want to do a FT MBA as I don’t have background in accounts/finance and want to be focused squarely at my MBA coursework for the next 2 years and get a solid academic foundation.
7. Post MBA Goals:
I love solving problems and working in teams and want to pursue a career path in Management Consulting. My main target company is McKinsey but I don’t want to put all my eggs in the same basket so I am also looking at career path in Investment banking and jobs which will give me deep knowledge in finance as an alternative. Eventually after gaining sufficient work experience, I plan to start my own consulting firm for technology products in next 10 years.
8. Target Schools:
LBS is my dream school, it has a diverse culture, global presence, solid ties in the financial world and provides a 2 year program which will give me enough time to do an internship and build solid academic foundation.
INSEAD has a very good placement record with McKinsey. It is a 1 year program which gives less time to study but still if I can land my dream job I am not complaining.
Chicago, Haas and Johnson, I am still doing more research on these schools and other top B-schools in the U.S where I might have a chance.
9. Weaknesses:
1) GMAT, I can write it again if that will be a significant factor in my case. I think I can get 700+ if that is the minimum threshold adcom of top 10 business schools prefers.
2) Common profile of an Indian male, IT background.
10. Questions
1) Will doing an EMBA in parallel help or hurt my chances of admission in FT program?
2) What are my chances at LBS, INSEAD, Chicago, Haas and Johnson?
3) Will writing GMAT again and scoring 700 help my application substantially?
4) Any other schools in U.S and Europe, I should research properly where I have a chance and meet my career goal of getting into McKinsey or a reputed IB firm?
Thanks
