My profile is as follows.
23, Male, Indian, Engineer (WOW!
)
Will be apping for fall 2009. Started preps on tat.
education:
BTech from Top 10 engineering college in India, 3.26/4.0, 710 (50,35), AWA 6
Work ex:
*worked in a design dept of the indian manufacturing major for 6 months
*Shifted to Sales in the same company and worked there for 18 months
{Achieved almost 200% of targets set, selected among 40 guys by the central marketing team to work along with management consultants to double the sales, made an analysis on our product costing and submitted a report with suggestions to top mgmt which were implemented. Had the opportunity to travel to remote places in southern india selling stuff to indian government establishments. Worked with clients from diverse sectors like steel, cement, oil and gas etc.}
* Got bugged working for a large organization for 2 yrs. Joined a start-up 2 months back which works on advising the small and medium enterprises in India. Took a 25% paycut to join here. Getting a lot of responsibilities here. The startup was formed by eminent personalities with 20+ yrs exp in their field. I am directly reporting to them.
* Presently working on an engagement with a client who is interested in entering a new sector in India and am doing the due diligence for that.
* Would be working in the technology vertical here (non IT though!) wherein i will contact people with new innovations/technologies and see whether any of it can be commercialized in india.
* Will be one of the two lead organizers of the India China conference organized by this start-up. It will deal with "how small Indian companies can enter China" and benefit from same.
* Will be put on a client from Pakistan and may start interacting with them shortly on his project.
* Involved with quite a few networking events revolving around entrepreneurship and startups in India
* Will be organizing and founding one such regional networking event along with a friend in the next 3-4 months
hardly any EC's presently. Would get into Dancing. Danced a lot in undergrad and have certs on tat. Love quizzing. Won lots of prizes during undergrad. So would be working only on those 2 activities. No community service. Absolutely not interested in joining NGO's etc just for the MBA application process.
Career goals:
Shifting to finance immediately post mba. In 4-5 yrs Would like to be in a role of investing in early stage technology companies after 4-5 years learning nuances of finance.
Targeting:
Stretch -> 2 schools from wharton/stanford/columbia/chicago GSB
Hopeful -> Any 3 from Duke/Cornell/Tuck/Darden/NYU
Safety -> Any 2 from the long list of purdue/rochestor etc.
Would apply to LBS as the 8th school.
How would you rate the schools I am targeting (which is Top 15) ?
I really want to get into a Top 15 B school. I am a bit confused since am pretty early (for Fall 2009). I request you to plz advice on how are my aims and goals set.

Good post -- looks like you're really lined up for a good run in 2009. I wouldn't concern myself too much with which school is top 15 and which isn't since there is no ultimate rankings. You should concern yourself with making sure that you attend the best school you can for your career goals.
Just to more directly answer your question, of the schools you listed only Purdue and Rochester aren't considered top 15 caliber.
You may be shooting for too many schools. When you apply to more than 5 it becomes very difficulty to really target the schools and you risk diluting your applications with recycled information. Many people fall for that trap and don't get in as a result.

Sorry for troubling you again. But what did you imply thru this? As someone who is well prepared for fall 2009 or someone who has a good profile and hence competitive for the schools in his selection (hopeful+stretch)?
I knew that Purdue and Rochestor were not top 15. My aim is to join the hopeful+stretch schools (which are top 15). The safety schools are the 15-30 rank schools which I am not sure whether I need to app.
I don't know how to select just 5 schools! Selecting 8 was tough!
I did not use rankings. I used Hjort's ultra elite/elite/trans elite categorization for analyzing which made it very simple. IMO it was more or less correct for top 15 and I did not verify beyond that. Among these I am looking at schools which will fit into my scheme of things.
