Hi, I am 31 white male, engineering major and currently work as a senior ship's officer on large containerships involved in international trade. I took the GMAT three times and scored 710 (47q/40v) on my last attempt. I had a 3.55 undergrad GPA in engineering at a state school. I am looking to apply at Tuck, Sloan, HBS and Wharton. I feel that my age may be an issue but my very unique background, extensive international travel and management experience are my strengths. Please advise what thoughts come to mind or weaknesses you see that I can address. Thanks

Sorry for the late reply; I've been traveling. You certainly have a very distinctive profile and a good enough GMAT to aim high. Whether you have the kind of profile that the four top schools you mentioned will warm to depends on aspects of your profile that you didn't specify like why you need an MBA, extracurricular leadership, and the kind of impact you've been able to have as a leader (no question that you do have leadership but do you just order crew around or can you 'effect organizational change' etc.?). I guess I am saying that your profile is so unusual I would want to know more before hazarding a guess as to your chances. Certainly, the top schools like really distinctive applicants (who also have the numbers) so my inclination is to say: go for it at these 4 schools.

Accepted.com, thanks for the reply. I did apply to Wharton, Tuck, Sloan and Chicago and decided to not apply to HBS. So far I have been offered to interview at all but Chicago and am still eagerly awaiting a reply from them. Your advice was right on the mark and I stressed why I am pursuing an MBA, what changes I have been able to help happen and what I can bring to their schools. I felt that my age (30), non traditional background, and State School undergrad were weaknesses but were in fact great strengths. My advice to others in the same situation is to not underestimate or discount themselves for the reasons I did. Thanks again. Will keep you posted as to the outcomes of my applications.
