Hi Paul/Accepted,

Target Schools: Harvard, Wharton, Oxford, MIT
UG GPA: 3.3/4.0 Double Degree (Business Administration, English Literature)
GMAT: >720 (testing at a greater than 720 right now)
AGE: 25
Ethnic Group: Asian (Male)

Notables:

1. built an online retailer with 2 family members. our net revenues are over $8M annually. I head up analytics, partnerships, and traffic acquisition (largely marketing).
2. built a fashion house with some friends -- major celebrities have worn our clothing (like coldplay and green day), and we have distribution at national chains (like nordstroms), etc.. Revenues are in the low millions.
3. project managing a $5M retail complex for my future father in law. I oversee everything -- legal, finance, architecture, operations, engineering, contracting, insurance, etc.

*PROBLEM -- I'm working at all three of these projects concurrently. One is a major online retailer, one is a brick and mortar retail complex, and another is a fashion house... does that show a lack of focus? Does the hit list sound unbelievable?

*PROBLEM -- I'm in my mid 20s and don't have an engineering or consulting "pedigree". Is that undesirable? Do people even care if you build a clothing company that has been worn by like coldplay/joss stone/etc.?

*PROBLEM -- I was a cofounder of the largest student movement at my university in over 40 years (we're one of the largest public universities in the US). All told, there were about 3000 individuals involved. It, however, WAS a a religious movement (Christian)... should I mention it? If so, how?

I'd sincerely appreciate an evaluation + insight, and I'll be happy to pick up some materials you have for sale as proof I appreciate your time. I do feel like I'm an exceptional candidate in SOME ways -- and a totally unexceptional one in a host of others. The real questions for me is, "Am I exceptional in the right ways?"

What do you think are my chances of a late round @ Harvard, Wharton, or Oxford?

Whoa, some profile. To address your questions/"problems":

1. Hmmm, it might show some lack of focus, but it won't take more than a paragraph to untangle it all for them. That is, as long as you know how all the pieces fit together and can spell them out, the schools should be on board. The hit list does sound unbelievable, but if it's true then it's the good kind of unbelievable. Be sure of course that you account for your own role in these successes rather than expecting them to admit you because of your organizations' success.

2. Not undesirable at all, no. You have a bus ad degree so they know you can add, and standing out from the crowd is a good thing. No worries here.

3. Yes, you should mention it, just don't get preachy or cloudy-minded on them and steer clear of controversial issues like abortion etc. The best bet is to focus on how the organization concretely benefited people's lives (as distinct from their souls if you get my drift). Social impact is good.

I think you should have a distinct chance at all three of those schools, with Oxford being the most doable and HBS the least--but all three doable.
