Like everybody else, I am extremely grateful for this service. Paul you're simply a blessing.
My situtaion: I was hoping to get into Columbia, Wharton, Harvard, MIT or Cornell but my GMAT scores cast doubt on my chances.
Biodata,
Female from an African country
Age 30
Academics
GMAT 670 (q40 61% v41 93%) Previous score (q37, V42) 650. with a B and B- in calc I and Calc II respectively.
Double major biology and chemistry, departmental honors in biology
GPA 3.36 and worked multiple jobs while in college (a small liberal arts college)
Activities and Achievements
-resident assistant in college overseeing 21 multinational students with a budget of $4000.
-Won a certificate of Honorable mention from the 2004 Yale Security Council simulation.
-Treasurer of my college's chapter of a biology honor society
-Vice president of International Studies Council
-Treasurer of International Relations Club
-1st place award for excellence in student Research from poster presentation of research findings at biology honor society convention
-Merit scholarships totaling $62500
-2nd place in graduate class award International Baccalaureate diploma
Post college activities
Dance and cooking classes
Mentoring a number of family and friends in education and career choices
Did not attend college until I was 24 due to lack of finances while back in Africa. Harnessed multiple resources to get to college in the U.S and pursue my desired education including saving up profits from a hair salon I ran financed by a microfinancing institution.
Simultaneously with running the salon, I volunteered at a start-up environmental not for profit and was heavily involved in care and maintenance of an almost world famous National Park, including clean-up and animal census.
Through the volunteer experience, I was elected to be a delegate to my country's my country's civil society meeting intended to account for the country's progress in upholding the mandates of the earth charter, producing a report that was presented in the 2002 Earth charter summit in Johannesburg.
Current Position: Research Technician
I currently do research work (2years at an institute affiliated with one of the Ivy leagues - my boss is a med school prof at the med school) -my project deciphering a particular pediatric cancer for which I have made significant progress-I may have publishable results soon.
Plan to go into equities research and eventually curve out a niche for myself in the biotech/pharma sector. At the same time want to establish expertise in financial markets with the aim for exporting that knowledge back to Africa to contribute to the current development in the markets in the hope that the resultant capacity building will help propel my country to the benefits of capitalist wealth.
Finally the age old question... do i stand a chance.

You have a very unusual profile, and your region of origin, distinctive personal story (obstacles overcome), and unusual career profile will help you. Your GMAT score is good enough to apply to all these schools, especially given that your GPA is good. Your personal story largely compensates for your age 'problem.'
Your career progress (i.e., increasing responsibility), leadership profile, and career focus seem a bit too imperfect to make HBS feasible for you. However, if you can put together essays and reco letters that effectively highlight your leadership, then I would not discourage you from applying to the other schools on your list. Cornell is the most doable school on your list (you're in there as far as I'm concerned), but I think you can get into the other schools as well (except HBS IMO) if you can 'package' yourself well and your profile's apparent blemishes.

Thanks a million Paul, I really was bashing myself about my GMAT score. Its such a relief to hear from someone else that its good. I have been working on my essays for the last two and half months and have enlisted the help of current student contacts from these schools so hopefully they will be top notch.
