Hey Paul,
I am 24 with 2 years work experience at a Big 4 accounting firm and have recently passed the CPA exam. I am planning to enroll to B-school in the fall of 2010 or 2011.
I am actively seeking a new job and my question for you is what type of job will give me the best of being accepted into an elite business school? My goal after receiving my MBA is to do management consulting or a corporate development role.
I feel like I need to stay away from the generic Sr. accountant or SEC reporting role as that won't differentiate myself from the crowd. I live in the SF bay area and am leaning toward a job at a late-stage start-up where I may be able to gain more exposure to the different aspects of how a business operates and would ideally lead to a strong letter of rec. from a founder or sr. exec.
Any suggestions would be great.

Sorry for not answering sooner. If you can't find work in MC or corporate development, you should seek a role that gives you opportunities to get leadership experience and/or have an outsized impact. A startup environment might be a good place to do that. Note, however, that you'll have to be able to give the schools a reason why you jumped out of your accounting career track, i.e., some reason other than "I thought it would help me get into B-school." You will need the line that runs from (a) your accounting career to (b) the position you to plan to enter before B-school to (c) your post-MBA goal to be coherent. Ideally, you will want it to be fairly obvious or at least defensible that position (b) brings you closer to position (c) than staying in position (a) does. Standing out from other applicants is less about the career or professional niche you're in, then in the impact, leadership you've been able to have in that career/niche.
