Demonstrating growth during employment is one of the prime factors of a successful MBA applicant. However seldom are there chances of a rapid and flexible career growth, especially when you are working with a company that among Fortune 5. In such cases how do you demonstrate "professional growth" in your application?
Brief explanation of why I am asking this:
My profile in brief: The company I work for is among Fortune 5, and since graduation from a very prestigious college (the best bachelor's in Mechanical engineering in India), I have been working for my company in various functions and in various places (Singapore, Netherlands, middle east, Western Europe, Australia) and at various levels of the organisation. I have been working for 1.5 years till now, and am thinking of applying either in 2009 or 2010 depending on how mature my profile is for getting in. So when I get in, I am in either with 3 or 4 years of experience. While there is still time to go, I have now time to improve what I work on depending on what I can achieve. I am only looking for the top 10 MBA programs (and nothing lower)
While my other dimensions in extra-curriculars, community, skills etc. have been fairly strong... one thing that worries me is "growth during employment".
The worry is because my company despite offering a "rosy" work experience is a global company, and very big (euphemism for bureaucratic). It's graduate development program is supposed to offer us several different postings, while offering us a flavor of the business. Therefore, at the end of 3/4 years it is very likely that I might end up not having any people reporting to me, or with a significant growth in managerial responsibility. Also mine is a consulting kind of role, which at my age almost literally means getting more experience and knowledge before I can really assume significant responsibilities.
Under such circumstances:
1. Is there anything I can/ should do within my organisation to improve the way I can demonstrate my professional growth?
2. If I could do nothing in 2 more years, is the application still strong if I have a good track record of performance?

is definitely expected... I am also looking for other members who can share experiences :

To answer your questions:
1. Responsibility is not just a matter of title or even direct reports, although they help. It is also a matter of the responsibility you have shouldered and that can be demonstrated by the size of projects you have worked on, the presentations you have been a part of. Furthermore, you can take leadership roles in professional organizations or in not-for -profit initiatives within your company as well as in community service arenas.
2. If you do "nothing" literally, no it will not be strong.
However, schools will expect to see normal growth. If you work for a Fortune 5 company, they will know what normal growth is. They will be excited by above average growth, but again will have a good idea about what is normal and with that as a baseline, you should be able to submit an application with competitive work experience.Best,

Since the day I have posted this I have been thinking a lot philosophically....
I like the MBA Admission process because it is not that the B-School selects you. It is that you select yourself. AT the time of application if you are really worthy of a B-School you will get in . Period.
I hope I can really improve myself. At the end of it, if the improved myself is worth it I will get in. If I dont, I shall keep improving similarly till the end of my life. In that case you might ask why is an MBA for :p
