Hey guys,
I'm new to the site but this looks to be like one of the best resources i've stumbled upon.
My GPA is not the greatest, but I am getting a dual degree (undergrad) in Mechanical Engineering and Operations Management (Business School) from the University of Maryland, College Park.
GMAT practice scores seem to be solid (Mid to high 700's), but my GPA is only a 3.3
As far as work experience goes -- I've coordinated the engineering recruitment program, was a research assistant for an IS professor at the business school here and designed the database architecture for presenting and storing his findings. I've also worked at a database marketing firm for the last 2 years. I started as an intern, then came on part time as a developer. I now run their internship program, work as a developer, and as a business systems analyst.
Other creds would include the university honors program, and being in a 3 year consulting based / client facing program that combines business/engineering/physical sciences students and is considered the most competitive at our school to get into (https://www.rhsmith.umd.edu/QUEST/).
So everything being laid out -- I know my GPA kind of sucks. it's a 3.3. Everything else seems to be pretty solid, but I really don't know enough about business school to decide whether or not the top tier schools are worth applying to.
I'm guessing my chances of going straight from undergrad are pretty much null -- but what about if I worked at my firm or one of the DC consulting firms for a year or so?
Sorry about being so general with my questions, I'm just really new to all this.

A 3.3 gpa is just below average at a top school but it won't be a hindrance to you. Tons of peoeple get into school with far lower GPAs. Get your 700, work for a few years and stick with this website. You will get into a top school.

I think 3.3 gpa could be mitigated with a solid (700+) GMAT score. And, since you have an engineering degree I do not think quantitative focus would be an issue for you.
But, you have not really mentioned anything about your extra-curricular or leadership activities during college. If you plan to attend a top MBA program (by which I mean Harvard, Stanford, Wharton etc..), you need to have a very strong background with demonstrated examples of leadership roles (or at least strong indication of potential leadership in the future).
Also, a solid work experience will be critical since you will be competing with literally thousands of very qualified applicants vying for the same spots.
Anyway, good luck with your career plans. Hope it works out for you.
