Hi Alex,
I've been reading some of the profile evaluations you've done in this forum and your honest responses are very insightful. I'm curious to see mine. Can you please take a look at my profile (detailed I would say) and answer a couple of questions? Your help is much appreciated and thank you in advance.
Female/27/Indian
Education:
Undergrad - B.Tech in Computer Science & Engineering (from a decent university ranked 2nd in my state in India), 78.8%, First Class w/ Distinction and stood 3rd in the class. I'm not sure I can convert this to US based GPA. Didn't have a choice to pick courses, but involved advanced math, some managerial courses (Managerial Economics & Accounting, Management Science, Operations Research) besides the core Computer Science courses
Grad - MS in Computer Science from Utah State University, 3.73 GPA. Courses focused in Computer Science.
Work Experience:
Full time - 3.5 years as a Software Engineer/Sr. Software Engineer/ IT Consultant. Started as a software developer for a mid sized supply chain mgmt company in NC and with my contributions to the team, got promoted to a senior role with in 1.5 years (typical promotion period: 3.5 - 4 yrs in the company). 2 yrs into this job, I've started looking for a more challenging role and took up IT Consulting with my current company, working for the Financial Services Dept of NYC. Although I don't have anyone reporting to me, there are lot of occasions on which I've stepped up in my role and gone the extra mile to get things done and motivate others. I wish to quote those in my essays to make up for my shorter than the average work-ex.
Part time - 1.5 yrs as a software engineer during my Masters for Computer Literacy Laboratory.
GMAT:
710: Q - 50 (94%), V - 35 (74%)
EC or Extra:
Involved in a variety of organizations in Undergrad and Masters - Vice President of the IEEE chapter of my undergrad univ (organized technical fests and code camps), President of the Indian Students Association at USU (organized shows for 1000+ ppl with profits proceeding to charities), Vice President & Treasurer of the ACM chapter of USU. Voluntary note taking for the disabled undergrad students at USU. Tutoring undergrad students in Math & Computers in free time. Got USU Vice President Fellowship for the 1st year of MS based on undergrad credentials and GRE score. I would say my EC activities have significantly reduced ever since I've started working full-time partly due to long hours and mostly due to laziness. I volunteer for community activities on some weekends, participate in charity runs and part of volunteer club with in the company, but haven't really held a leadership role like at college. Contribute to open source software communities. Have a few Certifications related to my work, but which I've pursued on my own.
Why MBA?
I would love to know the bigger picture. Although I've enjoyed working in IT so far and it has helped to improve my analytical and problem-solving skills significantly, I would like to acquire the broader skills required for general management and strategy/decision making as well and apply them in a role which has a greater reach with in the organization. To be honest, I don't want to be restricted to IT; I always see myself as an analyst/engineer rather than a programmer even in my current role.
Short-term goal: To get into Management Consulting.
Long-term goal: Entrepreneurial venture in India with my better half.
Target Schools (mostly based on MC recruiting and biased to North East):
Love to go to: Wharton, Sloan, Tuck, Kellogg
Like to go to: Columbia, NYU, Chicago, Yale
I understand most (or all) of those schools might be long shots. Am I being too ambitious with the schools? Also, do you think my Verbal score might raise a red flag, especially in comparison with the Quant score?
Thanks,
Bharathi
