Hi,
I am in the process of applying for MBA programs starting in Fall 2010. Please give me some feedback on my profile:
Nationality: Dual citizenship, American and EU national
GPA: 3.0 in Electrical Engineering at a state school
GMAT: I take on Sept. 15th. Diagnostic tests indicate somewhere in the 650 to 700 range.
Age: 35 at matriculation
Work Experience:
4 years in oil field services industry, Significant responsibility and leadership experience. Good career progression during this time.
3 years as a Product Engineer for a contractor in the mining industry.
6 months supervisory position at a mine in Indonesia.
+ whatever I do for the next year.
Extensive international experience in all roles.
I don't have much formal EC experience. I spend most of my free time travelling or catching up with friends.
I would like to go to one of the programs in Europe and I am particularly interested in the programs in Spain (ESADE, IESE, IE). So far I have really enjoyed the international component of my career and I would like to continue with this. I would also like to broaden my network in Europe to open doors there given that I can easily obtain a work permit for any EU country.
I am also considering some second tier schools in the US (top 30 excluding top 10) but I still need to do some research to narrow them down to ones that would fit my goals.
What are my chances? Given my profile, what will be the biggest deal breakers, if any?
Also, does the chance of getting in go down dramatically if I apply in round 2 instead of round 1? I'm thinking about taking the GMAT again mid October if I don't score near 700.

As I mentioned in other posts, there is no difference between Rounds 1 and 2. Apply when you're ready.
It'll come down to your GMAT and how you execute your applications for the Euro schools, which do skew a little older, but at 35 you'd still be an outlier (most Euro schools skew a few years older, so most are in their late 20s/early 30s, as opposed to US schools where most are in their mid- to late-20s).
The only potential concern is that schools will want to steer you towards their exec programs even if you're trying to do a career switch. You have solid experience, and even if the jobs you're looking for do value longer experience than say banking/consulting, they are still entry level type positions and you should go in with the expectation that to make a real switch will likely mean a significant step back in responsibility and money.
