hey guys, do u think it is true that the "eliteness" or reputation of a school matters more when it comes to an MBA degree and not as much when it comes to a masters degree. i.e. there is a big difference between an MBA from a school ranked 1, 2 or 3 and a school ranked 97,98,99 , but not as big of a difference between masters degrees(economics, finance etc) in the same set of schools?
Is it because masters degrees are more uniform in quality and composition than MBA degrees? I ask this because there is obviously a huge focus in this forum about GMAT scores, recos, GPAs to get into top elite schools. Can u not get the same quality of education from say Oklahoma state that you would from Georgetown U?

This is an interesting theory and you are right about your last statement that one could probably get just as good an education at a lower ranked school. The problem, of course, is that in many instances you are not attending school so much for the true skills acquired as for the signalling element. A degree from a top school sends the signal to employers that you are one of the best students and that you have learned from the best professors at the best facilities etc. Thus, the external perception of your learning might be far more important in the employment context than your actual learning (at least in the short run). Further, some employers simply do not recruit at the less elite schools so this complicates employment. For instance, MBA recruiters stress the importance of consistently high student quality when they recruit from schools - if your school is unknown you face a hurdle in showing that your school produces such students.

I doubt that there's much of a difference between an MBA and an MF program in the perceived difference between the top-ten schools and the top-hundred schools. There's probably the same "eliteness" effect. But I agree with the previous post about the quality often being the same (MBA or MF), but there being true value in the reputation. I often hear people say, "You're just paying for the name." Even if this is true, the name is worth a lot!! Yeah, you won't necessarily learn more at a top-ten school (although some will argue that you will), but having that name can make things easier from time to time.
That's not to say that a lower-ranked school isn't worth it. That's not true at all. But just know that, with a lower-ranked school, you're getting the education component but not the reputation asset. If you're comfortable with that -- and many people are -- then a lower-ranked school may be perfect for you. This is true no matter what degree you're getting.
