I'm looking for a little advice on my chances of getting accepted into a B-school somewhere, or possibly doing on online MBA. My undergrad career was nothing to write home about, I think I finished with a 2.5 GPA, although my grades for the classes in my major (accounting) were a little better. I was going into a family business and getting a degree was more of a formality for me, although I took a tougher one like accounting only because I enjoyed working with numbers (for some strange reason!) and enjoyed some of the professors in that major at my school (UW-Milwaukee) which had an excellent accounting program. Not to sound like I'm bragging here, but one skill I do have is doing well on standardized tests. I scored a 29 on the ACT without any prep work (and going out late the night before!) and I have been horsing around with some of the free practice GMAT's and have been doing well on those, too. (although I do need to brush up on a few math skills to really hit it well) I graduated in 1998 and I think I have a decent work history, I have opened and/or operated several successful businesses, although they have been with family partners. I also serve on the board of directors for the quasi-governmental business improvement district for the area my current business is located in, along with 2 subcommittee board positions. (this is a position that the mayor of the city appointed me to, not just some ad hoc group of merchants or something like that)
Now, I'm not looking to get into Harvard, Yale, Stanford, etc. I'm just looking to get into a decent B-school so I can get an MBA, or possibly a masters in tax. Does my undergrad GPA hurt me that much? I'm not guaranteeing a 790 on the GMAT, either, but assuming I can nail an above average score, would that help mitigate my lower GPA? As far as my work experience goes, how best to maximize that? Any other advice on where to look into for this? Also, what about the online idea? I already would assume that I should only consider accredited schools, any other advice on the online route? Thanks!
