Alternate transcript means enrolling in 2-3 courses at your local community college or online extension courses through an university. Typically most applicants with low GPAs tend to do this -- basically taking undergrad level courses in calculus, algebra, statistics, microeconomics, physics, etc. - no bonus points for taking upper level courses - just the 100-level (or intro/freshman level) courses is fine. And no, your major GPA isn't enough if your overall GPA isn't strong.
