Hi Alex,
Can you shed some light on my candidacy for selected schools.
Nationality Pakistan
GMAT 700 AWA 6.0
GPA 3.2 from Stern, NYU. Had a 2.1 freshman year but pulled it up significantly in Junion, Senior year
Experience: 3 year I Banking (Morgan Stanley) 1 year working at a start up venture capital firm where I am a minority partner and the financial analyst
Extra Cur: Have founded a successful sports league in the state, volunteer director of a media company, won various prizes in sports, academics, writing.
Story: Want to focus on venture capital industry esp current firm and start my own firm in Pakistan in the next 5 years.
Schools: Columbia, Stern, Yale, Wharton and maybe Harvard if I think I am think I have a shot
Any suggestions on chance, advice. Anything I can do to improve my candidacy.

If you're applying this year, there's not a whole lot you can do to improve your candidacy other than focusing all your energy on doing the best you can on the written applications (you can't change who you are in a few months). If you're applying in the next 12-24 months, then you can probably take some online extension courses (2-3) to build an alternate transcript so that along with your GMAT, you are able to show that your low GPA was due to lack of effort, not lack of brains (there's no way to "spin" a low GPA - all you can do is damage control, and "lack of effort" is certainly the lesser of two evils when compared to "lack of brains").
From what little you wrote, the range of schools you mentioned should be fine. Give HBS and Wharton a shot as your stretch schools. And Columbia, Stern and Yale are schools that you should be competitive for. And given your career goals and where you're at in your career, I don't think it's worthwhile going beyond the top 16.

Thanks Alex. When you mention alternate transcript can you clarify what you mean. Are you suggesting retaking the GMAT and get a 750+ score perhaps.
Anything else I can do to compensate for the low GPA. I have a 3.9 major GPA in very competitive classes at Stern. Does that alleviate Adcom's concerns.
