Hello,
I was wondering, if an application does not specify a time frame for when you did extra cirricular/community activities, is it appropriate to list things as far back as college or grad school?
I did pretty extensive research work as an undergrad and was not paid for work when school was in session, but was paid for work during the summers. Does this still count as an extra cirricular activity (if I clarify on the dates I was not paid)?

I suppose I am a strict constructionist about this . . .
1) Was the research outside of the scholastic curriculum you were following? If yes, it is was probably extracurricular.
2) I would distinguish between extracurric and community service activities. It is unclear how this research as explained is community service. Many activities such as team sports are extracurricular but not an apparent form of community service.
3) I would apply a reasonableness standard for the age of the activities. It is unclear from the posting how long ago these activities took place. However, I think many readers would assume that the activities listed were either the most recent or the most impressive.

I didn't do the research for a class project and it wasn't required for graduation, but it was related to the field I was studying in college (although the research was multidisciplinary requiring mech e, electrical e, and a bit of chem).
I did the research work about a good 5 to 6 years ago. The main reason why I want to mention it is because it prompted me to go to grad school to study the field more in-depth as well as shape the my future career path. In fact, i think it had a more profound effect on me than my undergrad cirriculum. Perhaps this is more appropriate for the "is there anything else you'd like us to know about you" section?
It definitely was a rewarding experience as I could see some of my results in journals published by the graduate student I was working for...
Oops, forgot to ask... do you think any activity done 5 or 6 years ago is too old to list (I did other clubs and volunteered some free time to the clubs I took part in)?
