Hello,
I'd really appreciate it if you could give me some feedback on my profile and goals.
I'm not applying this year - I plan to build on my newfound career for a year more before jumping in for 2011.
Am I aiming too high (in terms of school selection - please see below) - assuming that I'll have 4 years of experience by the time I apply? What "safe" schools out there are good for a career in finance/investment? I'm interested in Wall Street jobs but am ok with US, Asia, or Euro schools.

1) Basic demographic info:
- Male, 24, Filipino
2) Educational Background:
- BS Engineering (Top 3 local university; 3.3+ GPA; honorable mention). I was in a drunken stupor about half the time though and my grades were much higher in my last three years than in my first two. I could (should) have done much better than 3.3.
- Currently in an MS Computational Finance program (part-time; good local b-school; it's still early days but I've got a 4.000 GPA so far after 2 terms)
- GMAT: T: 780 (99); Q: 51 (98); V: 47 (99); AWA: 5.5 (76)
- I'm in the CFA program, currently studying for L3 after passing L1 and L2 within months of each other on the first try.
3) Work experience:
- Just started (6 months) with a job in financial and economic research for a top local bank - I'd been working to shift careers into investment since 2008 and am really obsessed with my current work - I now know I can stay in finance for the rest of my life. I'm actually planning on taking an MBA to upgrade my career in finance and not to shift careers, as many people seem to want to do.
- I spent a little over a (very intense) year in management consulting before my current job. Before leaving, I had successfully led a project (with a small team of two but several shared support staff) for a global client that involved vendors/suppliers from several different industries and my clients' managers from all over North America and Europe.
- I'll have over 4 years experience by the time I hope to start my MBA program.
4) Extracurriculars:
- Co-captain of my baseball team back in university, sports writer (won some awards too). I still play baseball today.
5) Short/Long term goals:
- I want to work in hedge funds - I'm especially interested in arbitrage strategies. A very close second choice would be equity underwriting or M&A. I'm in love with NYC and I want to live and work (and study!!!) in the world's most important financial center.
6) Schools:
- My first choice for now would be Columbia. I'm also looking at Wharton, Booth, Sloan, and HBS. If dinged from those I'm considering Stern, Johnson, Yale, LBS.

Glad to hear you've found something you love to do. It's encouraging! I too aspire to be bubbly about my daily work. Two questions: what triggered your interest in finance and 2) can you provide a debrief of your study plan for achieving 780 in the share your gmat experience forum? share-your-gmat-experience-8/

Ey there gottabwise,
Thanks! Being passionate about your work is extremely satisfying and I encourage everyone I know to go for their dream jobs.
1) Well I like numbers and I like figuring people out. Money is a social construct that's expressed in numbers. We get all these prices and interest rates and whatnot but in the end all these things are only worth what society says they're worth. So it's a great combination of those two interests of mine. It's too bad I only realized this after spending five years in engineering.
Half-jokingly, I KNEW I wanted to be in finance when everyone started hating on all the investment bankers after the crisis. Folks, that's pure ENVY. Haha.
2) I'm not sure if I have the time to write in detail about this. I'll make a post when I find time. But I have a couple of pieces of advice if you're interested: First, in my opinion, studying for the GMAT is more like practicing for sports than studying for a typical college exam. Most, if not all, of the problems given should have some sort of "quick" solution. The key is knowing when you need to look at the problems in a different way and not getting stuck in a particular train of though. I'm oversimplifying, of course. Second, the Kaplan stuff worked very well for me - I think their advice on CR and DS was extremely helpful in getting the right mindset. I didn't study too much though. I studied and practiced for a few hours per weekend for 8-10 weekends or so.
