Hi,
I am coming from a non-business background (computer science). I am currently pursuing my MS in CS from a decently reputable engineering school. Other than an undergraduate course in macroeconomics (which I admittedly didn't do to well in [online course]), I have no prior coursework that is business related. My question is, should I look into taking a few business classes to show my interest? And if so, what should these classes be (finance, account, marketing, etc)? Should these classes be at the graduate level or undergraduate level, or does it not really matter? Do schools view this as me being a proactive applicant? Thanks.

Hi Bryan,
A lot of MBA candidates come from engineering backgrounds without any business-related coursework, and do just fine in the MBA program. That being said, relevant coursework provides multiple advantages:
- one, obviously shows your initiative and proactive nature to the AdCom
- two, can help you hit the ground running in the MBA program and
- three, depending on the flexibility of the curriculum, can even help you test out of courses to focus on ones that are more relevant to your career ambitions.
If you are applying this year, focus on taking the GMAT first, and extra coursework later. Extra coursework and GMAT are both part of your academic profile, and GMAT has a higher value for easier comparison. If you do end up taking the coursework before you apply, it would be a good point to mention in the application. If not, you could always mention that you are planning to before you join to be better prepared. Basic Accounting and Statistics are a part of nearly every school's required coursework, including University of Chicago Booth GSB, where there are only three required courses. If you are planning to take these, I would recommend beginner's courses in both these areas. If you do grad-level, that's great - if not, undergrad-level is fine too.

I actually would like to extend on that point. I am currently working as an engineer and would like to take some courses/self study on Stats/Basic Accounting/Finance before attending business school. Not sure how I should proceed from here... any recommendations? Thanks in advance
