Question from a prospective student:
Education: 3.27 gpa/History from a top 25 school (one of the UC's), 3.7gpa MA Urban Planning from Ivy League school (graduating next year, but that will be my gpa at application).
-At this particular ivy league school, I have also been involved in a selective semester long program at the business school that focuses on sustainability. As part of the program I've been working on a consulting project for a renewable energy company.
GMAT: I'm not going to apply unless I hit 650-700, so let's just assume a score in that range for arguments sake (I bought my
MGMAT books and will start studying once the semester ends mid-May)
WE: 3 years at a real estate development firm in Los Angeles, construction management and then promoted to a position where I oversaw the budgets and work progress on 7 projects ($200m)
I'm an URM/Latino. I don't know if that's still relevant.
I'm looking to get into social entrepreneurship upon graduation from the MBA. Ideally a social/community development VC fund.
I have two questions:
1) Do you think going from a fairly basic real estate background with an MA in Urban Planning to VC would be seen as a realistic post-MBA goal to adcoms? Or do you think my essays should focus on something like affordable housing development, which might look a bit more suited to my skills (it's probably my 2nd career choice, but I'd have no problem discussing it in my essays)
2) Which schools would be most receptive to my background/experiences? Obviously there is Duke, Yale, Berkeley, Cornell that have the social enterprise going on. However who would be most receptive out of Harvard, Wharton, MIT, Tuck, Columbia??
I understand there are many other factors to "fit", but this is one that I have been very curious about. Thanks very much.
