Well, for a start, they are clearly written by the recommenders themselves. The biggest thing is authenticity -- of course just about every rec letter submitted by applicants are going to wax poetic about how great the applicant is -- but the ones that stand out are the ones that don't sound like puff pieces. They sound genuine, sincere, engaging, personable, and specific.

In a process that unwittingly encourages bullsh*t, it's the ones that sound *real* yet substantive (in terms of how great you are) that stand out.
